January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. is born. He was important to our history because he helped African Americans become free. 2. January 29, 1900, The American Baseball League was formed. It is now known as Major League Baseball. 3. January 31, 1919 Jackie Robinson was born. He was very important to baseball because he was the first African American man allowed to play baseball. February 1. February 6, 1895, Babe Ruth was born. He was an important baseball player. 2. February 8, 1910, The Boy Scouts of America were formed. They are still an active group today. They do lots of good things for people. 3. February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln our 16th president was born. He was a very important president. He helped to free the slaves. March 1. March 10 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call. What would we do without telephones today?? 2. March 12, 1912, The girl scouts of America were formed. This gave the girls something to do like the Boy Scouts. 3. March 21, 1963, Alcatraz Prison clears out all of its inmates. This was important because now we have a whole island prison with no prisoners. 1. April 14, 1879, Albert Einstein was born. He was important because he came up with the theory of relativity. April 2. April 14, 1912, The Titanic sank. It killed about 1,500 people. 3. April 19, 1775, the Revolutionary war began. May 1. May 3, 1904, New York was the first state to have a speed limit for cars. This is important today because it helps us not have so many accidents. 2. May, 5 1862, Mexico gains its independence from the French. 3. May 18, 1980, Mt. Saint Helens erupted. Important to history because it isn’t every day that we see a volcano erupting. June 1. June 6, 1939, was the date that the first little league game was played. It is important because today many kids still get to participate in little leagues. 2. June 22, 1847, the first donut was invented. YUM! 3. June 27, 1893, the song “Happy Birthday” was published. We still use it to this day! July 1. July 4, 1776, America claimed its independence! Fourth of July is a day we never forget. 2. July 6, Elvis Presley makes his first record. He became a big recording artist. 3. July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon and took their first steps. August 1. August 1, 1867, an African American voted for the first time during a state election in Tennessee. 2. August 5, 1985, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was established. It gives music artists a place for them to have history. 3. August 16, 1954, Sports Illustrated was published for the first time. It is still a very popular magazine. September 1. September 9, 1850, California was admitted to the Union. What a great state! 2. September 17, 1787, The United States Constitution was signed. 3. September 21, 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor was appointed to the United States Supreme Court. She was the first woman appointed to this position. October 1. October 2, 1908, Henry Ford introduced the Model T car. Our cars sure have come a long way! 2. October 2, 1950, The comic “Peanuts” ran in the newspaper for the first time. It is still popular today even though it now is only running old cartoons. 3. October 17, 1989, The San Francisco Bay earthquake happened. It was during the “Battle of the Bay” World Series where the Oakland A’s were playing the San Francisco Giants. November 1. November 11, 1919 was when we started celebrating Veterans day. It is important to remember all of those who have fought in wars for our country. 3. November 22, 1963, our president, John F. Kennedy was shot and killed by an assassin. 2. November 24, 1863, was the first time we celebrated Thanksgiving. December 1. December 2, 1982 First artificial heart transplant. Helped doctors give people new hearts. 2. December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked. This made the United States enter World War II. 3. December 9, 1973, Noah Webster published New York’s first daily newspaper.
