CONCLUSIONS AND
INSPECTING THE
INTRODUCTIONS
English 101 Honors Writer’s Workshop Fall 2013
Let’s start at the very
beginning of your
introduction—a very good
place to start. What is the
FIRST thing that you
introduction paragraph must
have?
Hook, Line, and Sinker….

 Statistical
Opening
(using numbers or percentages relevant to topic)
In 1982, ten thousand
humans beings died
of starvation. Millions
of thoughtless overfed
people did nothing
about it. This
shouldn’t happen in
today’s world. Man
must develop a
concern for his fellow
man.

 Allusion (referencing some famous literary work, event in history, or
piece of art.)
Two thousand years
ago, Jesus told how
three men walked past
a robbed and bleeding
traveler and how only
the fourth, a Samaritan,
had enough humanity
to pause and help the
sufferer. There are not
enough “Samaritans” in
this modern world. Man
must develop a concern
for his fellow man.

 Descriptive Opening(use more than the five senses who you see,
When walking through any village in
smell, hear, taste, or touch!)
America one may discover on at least one
end of the town the dirty, neglected,
overcrowded tenements or hovels where
the poor abide. In leaky roofed shacks with
torn, dingy shreds of wall paper hanging
from water stained walls, the beaten,
helpless children huddle with pinched and
hungry faces around the evening’s scanty
offerings. It is ironic that modern man has
developed his technology to the point
where he could relieve virtually all of such
unnecessary suffering, but has not
developed his social conscience to the
point that he is moved to do so. Man must
develop a concern for his fellow man.

 Conversation(using 3 questions min. that aren’t answered in body of
paper)
A French peasant came begging to the door of
Marie Antoinette, the bride of Louis XVI.
“And what does he want?” demanded the queen.
“Your Highness, the man is hungry,” replied a
courtier.
“Well, then let him eat bread.”
“Your Highness, he has no bread.”
“Then let him eat cake, and the haughty queen
turned thoughtlessly to her own pursuits
According to the story, a month later the queen was
dead. She was guillotined by the French people
because she did not have enough social
conscience to feed a hungry man. Many people in
the modern world are turning from the needy of
today fully as callously as Marie Antoinette turned
from the French Peasant. Modern man must
develop a concern for his fellow man.
Ok, so I’ve got my hook…now what?

 Evaluation
of the V.I.P. status of your essay’s subject
These amazing,
controversial
photographs of the
comet will continue
to be the subject of
debate because,
according to some
scientists, they yield
the most important
clues yet revealed
about the origins of
the universe.

 Statement
of essay’s broader
implications
Since the studies

discovery of a
cure for AIDS in
human beings,
the experiments,
as expensive as
they are, must
continue.

 Call
your audience to action
The fate of World War II
hero, Raoul Wallenberg, is
still unknown. Although
Congress has awarded
him honorary citizenship,
such a tribute is not
enough. People must
write their congressional
representatives today to
voice their demand that
they investigate his
disappearance or
produce proof of his
death. No hero deserves
less.

 Warning based on essay’s thesis.
Understanding the
politics that led up to
Hiroshima is essential for
all Americans—indeed,
for the entire world’s
people. Without such
knowledge, the frightful
possibility exists that
somewhere, sometime,
someone may drop the
bomb again.


Witticism that emphasizes or sums up the point of the essay
No one said dieting
was easy. However,
for some people who
have surrendered,
the cliché, “half a
loaf is better than
none” has taken on a
new meaning.

 Forecast
based on essay’s thesis
Soap operas will
continue to be
popular not only
because they distract
