Lights, Camera, Action…Verbs That is!
1. An action verb is a word that expresses

EX 1: The director shouts at the members of the
cast.
EX 2: The lights are flashing above the stage.
Action Verbs can express different actions
such as physical and mental actions
• PHYSICAL ACTION
VERBS express
physical action. They
show the subject(s)
physically doing the
action of the
sentence.
• MENTAL ACTION VERBS
express mental (thought)
action.
They show the subject(s)
doing activities such as
thinking, forgetting,
memorizing.
EX 1: The audience arrived
in time for the performance
EX 1: Several singers have
memorized the lyrics of a
song.
PHYSICAL ACTION VERBS: Make a list of
physical action verbs below.
MENTAL ACTION VERBS: MAKE A LIST OF
MENTAL ACTION VERBS BELOW.
RULES FOR HAS, HAVE, HAD
Has, Have, Had, are often used before other
verbs. They can also be action verbs when they
tell that the subject owns or holds something
EX 1: The actors already HAVE their costumes.
EX 2: The director HAS a script in her back
pocket.
EX 3: Rosa HAD a theater program from 1920.
