Keeping Our Kids Safe at Home and School
“If your child is surfing the Web, you need to be
paddling right alongside him - or at least observing
him carefully from the shore.”
Did You Know?
❖ Twenty one percent (21%) of K-2 children have access to
cell phones.
❖ Nearly 50% of children in kindergarten or first grade
report talking with people through websites. Only half
have parents watch their online activity.
❖ Seventy percent (70%) of children ages 7-18 have
accidentally encountered online pornography through a
web search.

❖ More than 25% of Facebook users last year were
under the age of 10.
❖ Only 15% of parents are “in the know” about their
kid’s social networking habits.
❖ Only 1/3 of households with Internet access are
protecting their children with filtering or blocking
software.

❖ Girls are more likely than boys to be the target of
cyberbullying.
❖ Ninety five percent (95%) of parents don’t know
common acronyms their children use when texting and
chatting online, i.e. POS (Parent Over Shoulder).
General Guidelines
❖ Keep the computer in a central location.
❖ Set time limits for computer use.
❖ Monitor cell phone use.
❖ Know the passwords to any online accounts your
child has.

❖ Teach your child not to click on ads, contests,
surveys, and giveaways.

❖ Be a good example for your child when using
technology.
❖ Become familiar with the technology used at home.
❖ Teach your child that what goes online, stays
online.
❖ Speak with your child regularly about what they see
and do online.

❖ Get involved, consider activities that you can do
together online, i.e. games, research.
❖ Always keep the lines of communication open with
your child.

❖ Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act
❖ COPPA requires websites and services to notify parents
directly and get their approval before they collect, use,
or disclose a child’s personal information.
❖ Personal information includes: a child’s name, address,
phone number or email address; their physical
whereabouts; photos, videos and audio recordings of
the child.

❖ Always check the Privacy Policy and/or Terms of Service on
a website to determine if COPPA is a factor.
❖ Many sites do not allow children under the age of 13 to use
their services at all.

❖ The Privacy Policy should give details about the
kind of information the site collects, their plans for
how they are going to use the information, and
directions on how to give parental consent.
