Topics for Discussion Today
Takeaways from the House Meeting we held earlier this semester at Ms. Horton-Olmos’s house. o Communication with the school was a key issue that seemed to resonate.
*communication has been suffering between staff and parents, partially due to families’ lack of internet connection to receive updates
*parents upset (misinformation and perceived lack of concern for students)
*Family Notes in NSNO (notes received during lunch not passed along to parent)
*Spanish-speaking parents feel unable to effectively communicate w/ teachers
*Positive experience: teachers effectively returning called between 24-48 hours
*Grade level notes not received via email
*need for more parent involvement to facilitate spreading or information
*uniform concerns- need for stricter reinforcement of dress code
*Robocall to inform parents of BOFA meetings?
Communication Club to have responsible students in charge of spreading messages o Scheduling the next House meeting
*Mrs. Sanchez’s on April 23 at 6:30 pm o After this we will develop teams to address the most pressing issue.
Upcoming events to end the year strong o Can we host an EOY event, like a carnival or block party to end the year off?
*May 28 Fundraiser/event
*needs more advertising in advance, parent invitations, etc.
*selling tickets 1 week in advance
5-8 pm (w/ promotion ceremony)
Updates on House Bill 5 and how that impacts your child’s path to graduation o YES already meets the requirements that were outlined to change o Schools may offer different graduation plans
*discussed new AP courses available next year
See handout
*Most schools require endorsements—only students on modified curriculum, special needs, etc. will be permitted to graduate with 22 credits (Vs 26)
o Current 8 th and 9 th graders will have personal graduation plans next year and every class after that.
Multi-disciplinary plan
*students choose between endorsements offered to create personal graduation plan; this is able to change year to year o Current 10 th and 11 th graders have the opportunity of opting in to a plan
*graduation related= option for class rings and letterman jackets for varsity athletes
Questions on the leadership transition for next year o Ms. Gounder to be school director of Brays Oaks starting in July 2015
Volunteer Opportunities o Morning supervision
*parent help from those already at the school in the morning? o After school help with supervision of students o Copy room support
*more parents to run copies for teachers, etc (another reason to strengthen communication)
Ideas for next year o Pre-buying school supplies
Bags for students to pre-order at the beginning of the year
There are suppliers who do it
Brenda will ask around for people who do this
*Order form instead of staff collecting money from students
*Stagger pickup by grade level
*student help to distribute ordered supplies?
*include shirts for incoming 6 th graders?
*follow up with Parker, follow up w/ Mrs. Sanchez with information
*create donations to collect old uniform items for students to use? o Thoughts? Connections?
