Course Title: AP Spanish Language and Culture

Department: Spanish

Grade Level : 11

Prerequisites: Must be Spanish native and/or heritage Spanish speaker

Textbooks: Temas by Vista High Learning (Draggett Parhena, Conlin Cole, Ersham Max and Mill án Elizabeth)

Contact: rosalesm@sanmiguelhigh.com

Tutoring: Every day before school starts 7:15 am – 7:50 am. During lunch and after school by appointment.

Course Description: This course is designed to develop and enhance students’ knowledge of the Spanish language through the four basic language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students develop a strong command of the Spanish Language by integrating the three modes of communication: Interpretative,

Interpersonal, and Presentational.

The course focuses on the integration of authentic resources. Students will improve their cultural knowledge of the Hispanic world as they will be exposed on art, history, literature, magazine, newspaper articles, holidays, traditions, etc. with the goal of providing diverse learning experience from their real life.

This course's objective is to prepare students for the Spanish Language and Culture Advanced Placement

Exam in the spring. For this reason, both teacher and students will speak exclusively in Spanish throughout the year.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

It is the responsibility of the faculty and students to promote fairness in the community and to incorporate and reinforce values of honesty and integrity inside and outside of the classroom. San Miguel expects students to be positive contributors to a healthy moral environment and to reflect honesty in their academic work.

Academic dishonesty is viewed as a serious ethical issue and a violation of the principles of justice and personal responsibility as expressed in our Lasallian Core Principles (page 4).

Once a teacher has determined that a student has violated the Academic Honesty Policy, any or all of the following consequences will occur: The teacher will speak with the student.

The teacher will inform the Vice Principal for Discipline.

The teacher will contact the family of the student.

The Dean of Discipline will follow up with the family within a reasonable time period.

The following consequences may occur when there is a violation of this policy. This list of consequences is not limited to those listed; other appropriate consequences maybe employed.

Homework: The student will receive a Zero for any assignment that has been copied or that she/he allows others to copy.

Cheating on a Quiz or Examination: The student will receive a grade of Zero for the specific quiz or exam in question.

 Plagiarism: Copying the work of others and passing it off as one’s own, or allowing another student to use your work as their own, will result in a grade of Zero on any assignment that is plagiarized.

The student may be required to re-do the assignment to ensure mastery of the concept or skill addressed in the assignment. It is left to the teacher’s discretion whether or not credit will be given for this second attempt.

Students may be dismissed for repeated violations of academic honesty policy. Cheating of any kind may result in the loss of academic honors. Chain of command for review of Academic Situations:

Teacher

Vice Principal for Discipline.

Principal

All incidents of Academic Dishonesty are documented in the student discipline log record on Powerschool.

Course policies: You and your instructor will speak Spanish 100% of the time. There will be pair-work, group activities and whole-class discussions in which you are expected to actively participate and to use only

Spanish.

Tests and Quizzes: Tests will always be announced at least three days in advance. Occasionally, I will give unannounced quizzes . If you are absent the day that a test is given, you will be expected to take the test the day you return. It will be YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact me about making up the exam. You may only make up one test per semester without penalty.

Unexcused Absences: A student who misses classwork due to an unexcused absence does not normally have the opportunity to make up such work (unless a special exception is granted) and the student will receive a ‘0’ for the work in question. Such classwork broadly encompasses all forms of in-class student work, homework and presentations due on the day of the absence, exams and other forms of assessment on the day of the absence. Please discuss your situation with your teacher.

Classroom Participation: Students must complete all assignments and be prepared for class. Daily participation grades are awarded for individual oral participation in class discussions and in group work. Lack of preparation and/or participation or for any absence results in a grade will be zero (0). Classroom participation will reflect individual preparation, classroom cooperation during group activities, and respect for the class and the instructor. Any student who arrives late or leaves early will lose participation points.

Handling of Assignments: All work must have first and last name, assignment name, date and class period in the header. Students should have a School email address. Keep all assignments in your Spanish binder.
