Wednesday February 27, 2013 (Video and Worksheet – Planet Earth – Deep Ocean) The Launch Pad Wednesday, 2/27/13 Give a brief description of the surface currents in Earth’s oceans. •There are five main gyres in Earth’s oceans, caused by prevailing winds. •The two gyres in the Northern Hemisphere rotate clockwise. •The three Southern Hemisphere gyres rotate counter-clockwise. •The currents of the oceans are caused by a combination of these gyre movements. •Warm and cold currents have a huge effect on the Earth’s climate. The Launch Pad Wednesday, 2/27/13 What is the major importance of ocean surface currents? Ocean surface currents regulate the Earth’s climate. What causes surface currents and what causes deep-ocean currents? Wind causes surface currents and water density differences cause deep-ocean currents. Announcements Inconvenience Yourself Day is an opportunity to focus on inconveniencing ourselves instead of inconveniencing others. It is also a day to recognize and acknowledge those who inconvenience themselves for others. Acknowledgment can be verbal, a note, or some small token of appreciation. Happy Inconvenience Yourself Day! Announcements I will inconvenience myself and be available after school today until 5:15. Date Due Date Into GradeSpeed Final Day 2/15 2/15 ? FRIDAY F17 2/20 2/21 ? FRIDAY Recent Events in Science Weather Extremes Provoked by Trapping of Giant Waves in the Atmosphere The world has suffered from severe regional weather extremes in recent years, such as the heat wave in the United States in 2011 or the one in Russia 2010 coinciding with the unprecedented Pakistan flood. Behind these devastating individual events there is a common physical cause, propose scientists of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The study will be published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and suggests that man-made climate change repeatedly disturbs the patterns of atmospheric flow around the globe's Northern hemisphere through a subtle resonance mechanism.
