East Africa University
Background information
East Africa University is located at the city of BOSASO in SOMALIA, in
north-eastern part of the country. Somalia lies at the eastern corner of Africa, known as the Horn of
Africa (see Map below).The campus of the university occupies 49.19 hectares of land and lies 5km
from the centre of the city. Bosaso was chosen as the site for university on the grounds of its large
population, numerous secondary schools and the commercial importance. East Africa University is
the largest and most full-fledged university for the north-eastern regions of Somalia (known as
Puntland State of Somalia) to fulfil the educational requirements of the society.

Although the idea of establishing a university level education in Puntland State of Somalia was the
agenda of early 1990’s for most of the prominent community members like community leaders,
intellectuals and educators, business community, this came true when the first stone was laid down
in October 1999 in Bosaso. The first two faculties of Business Administration and Shariah and
law took their first intake on September 2000. The faculty of Education opened its doors to Puntland
community in 2005. Computer science faculty was added in 2003. In the academic year 2008-9,
the Faculty of Medicine started enrolling students. The establishment of East Africa University
(EAU) of Bosaso came as the response to fill the importance to train the youth in order to participate
in the development of their country. This could be regarded as an institution for expanding the
educational system in order to graduate qualified people who are capable of meeting the needs of
the country’s ambitious future development plans.

EAU Objectives
East Africa University was established to fill the gap of tertiary educational system
in Puntland State of Somalia and enhance the development and vision of the
population for the future development of the nation. The university set the following
objectives to reach its national goal:
1. To provide standardized higher education for the current and coming
generations.
2. To organize quality training and skills to the people for the development of
Somali nation.
3. To encourage education for different fields of technology, science and Art
4. To remain open for all the high school graduates in order to spread education
throughout the Nation.
5. To serve the nation and solve the unrest through the weapon of education.
6. To promote peace and cohesion among the people of Somalia and train
manners and ethics that can help the coming generations to establish a sound
future.
7. To create awareness and confidence among the public to use their inbuilt
qualities and capabilities.
8. To participate the reconciliation process of the Somali people and nurture the
concept of tolerance and good neighbourliness among the people that could
enhance ways of achieving lasting peaceful solution and conflict resolution.

4. Technical Capacity
East Africa University has the needed capacity to deliver successfully most needed
educational, scientific, legal and/ technical training locally. This is indicated by the number of
years that EAU has been in operation, number of graduates from the various faculties and
qualified academic staff that runs the University and the huge expansion in few years with
difficulty situations and limited resources. A very tangible indicator is the successful
implementation of:
1) A 3 phase training of Puntland Government Civil Service staff for statistics.
2) Again (3) six months training of Judges, Prosecutors and court staff
members to improve our justice
3) A two phase Post Graduate Diploma of Educational management in coordination with Islamic University Of Uganda (IUIU)
4) An MBA Program with Open University of Malaysia is also commencing in
the next Academic Year
5) A master degree in Education Management in collaboration with Nairobi
University.
