This year's festival theme is Taking good care of yourself.
Discover ways to enjoy having a good time and be a part of events and activities. It's a
great way to give yourself a treat and have fun.
Whatever your passion – the arts, sport, touring, learning, or meeting new people –
we’re sure this festival has something for you!
With many free and low cost events on across Victoria, this program gives you an
exciting taste of what’s on offer in October this year. However, with more than
1,000 events scheduled, you’ll also want to check the festival calendar on Seniors Online
at www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au which provides full details of all events.
Your local council (see page 126 onwards) can also give you information about what’s

Once again, free metropolitan and regional public transport is available for all Victorian
Seniors Card holders. For the period 5 – 12 October there are eight days of free
metropolitan and town bus service travel. Victorian Seniors Card holders can also enjoy

Taking good care of yourself
In the lead up to this year’s festival and reflecting on what Taking good care of
yourself means, we talked with four older Victorians and asked them what was
important to them in their daily lives and what matters most to their wellbeing.
A common thread is walking – for pleasure, to get to local shops and facilities, and for
the exercise it provides. Another shared interest is being involved in their community
in a variety of ways as a means of pursuing their interests and keeping in touch with
friends and acquaintances.
The theme of collaboration around positive outcomes also links them.
This covers everything from being an active grandparent, to taking on informal
mentoring roles to socialising to creative endeavour.
Read their stories and, if you like, let us know what you think or
tell your own story by going to www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au and following the links to
Telling your story.
Alan Hopgood
Alan’s life changed significantly 20 years ago when he was diagnosed with prostate
cancer. Apart from the significant life changes resulting from dealing with this illness, the
diagnosis also had a significant impact on his creative life. At the request of his specialist,
Alan wrote a book – Surviving Prostate Cancer: One Man’s Journey – and this led to him
writing the first of his Health Plays – For better, for worse, a comedy about men’s health,
intimacy and cancer.
“… my advice to all is that there is no reason to stop doing what you love
until they knock you back!”
“I am passionate about finding better ways to talk about health and I believe that bringing
the arts and health together does work.“ Alan has
had the opportunity to experience the reactions of hundreds of audiences to the personal
stories the plays present.
Alan describes himself as an active grandparent who thoroughly enjoys the opportunities
this gives him. He is a walker, with the temptation of a fresh baguette a good reason to
stroll through his local streets each day. “I am mindful of both the physical and mental
health benefits this pleasurable activity affords me” says Alan.
“I am fortunate in being able to do what I do and my advice to all is that there is no
reason to stop doing what you love until they knock you back!”
Shirley Herbert
Shirley grew up in East Preston and moved to central Victoria when she married. Family is
very important to her – she has visited England five times to stay with her daughter and
regularly enjoys the company of family living locally.
She nursed at the Bethlehem Home for the Aged and following retirement and the
death of her husband she sought out ways to stay busy and enjoy the company of
others. In particular, Shirley was a founding member and is the President
of the Bendigo Life Activities Club. The club provides her with social opportunities
combined with the chance to learn new things and foster long term interests.
“I am always happy when I am with others”
A life of hard work means that Shirley has undergone knee and hip replacements. She still
enjoys walking as one way of getting out and about and in the warmer weather attends the
local pool for water exercises.
“I am always happy when I am with others” says Shirley. “I think people enjoy my humour
and general approach to life.”
Talking to Shirley it is apparent that she does things – often for other older people,
enthusing them with her down to earth approach. Her motto: “Don’t sit on your
backside and watch a fly crawling up the wall!”
Maggie Millar
Four years ago Maggie and her partner decided to move from Melbourne to country
Victoria. As a result she is conscious
of what is involved in establishing a new sense of belonging and identity.
Following the move Maggie committed herself to serious painting. One of the first things
she did was join three art groups active in her region – to meet fellow artists, to work
alongside them and to enjoy company and discussion.
The word community can represent both local and, more and more nowadays, the sense
of connection with like-minded people living anywhere.
“I think that it is perhaps easier to join in the community of a local town than it would be
in a big city” says Maggie. “The locals have been open and welcoming.” We think this
may have a lot to do with her enthusiasm to be involved.
Maggie has Type-2 diabetes and is very conscious of the need to stay as fit as possible.
“Luckily the natural beauty that attracted us to the Kyneton area provides sufficient
inspiration for both painting and walking. Often the walk leads to a catch up and coffee
with friends and acquaintances” says Maggie. She also commits to regular gym visits.
“Often the walk leads to a catch up and coffee with friends…”
“As much as I place friends and staying in touch at the centre of staying connected,
I also value regular time
alone – reflection, creative thinking, book reading and all the things that being in control
of your time and having choices can offer.”
Betty Knight
Betty was born in Nhill and spent her working life in Melbourne. Following nursing training she
had a long career in public health. She then completed Certificate
4 training and spent a number of years teaching students undertaking TAFE health courses.
“I enjoyed this period and the diverse combination of the students made every day full of
questions. The younger students showed an interest about the ages of some tutors that
seemed irrelevant; at times these comments reflected the negative attitudes of society
towards older people. I think ageism is rife, we are lumped together as a cohort with
the assumption being that older people cannot be progressive.
“I enjoy Melbourne and for 18 years have volunteered for Tourism
Melbourne”
When I was young older people appeared stern and unapproachable. That has changed
and I think it is because more of us maintain an interest in a broad range of activities locally
and on a broader stage as we grow older.
I am one of the original members of the City of Port Phillip Older Persons Consultative
Committee (OPCC), a volunteer reference group to Council on matters related to older
residents. The OPCC have submitted many successful proposals to Council to promote a more
cohesive community and sense
of belonging for older residents. We organise local events for the Seniors Festival. I am a
member of U3APP and Probus Club Port Melbourne, and I am
a COTA Victoria member.
I enjoy Melbourne and for
18 years have volunteered for Tourism Melbourne, assisting visitors with information to
explore the CBD and the State of Victoria. I go to the City Baths gym for classes and my
individual program, as it is good to stay active. I think it’s important to
have a positive attitude to being an older person and to engage within an active
community.”

Old age is no place for sissies
A work in progress by conceptual artist Laurene Dietrich
in collaboration with musician and songwriter Peter Sheen and filmmaker Erin
McCuskey.
Age is relative. An arbitrary concept, and also inevitable. We start to age the minute
we are born. Some people worry about ageing all their lives. Others don’t. Some
people age easily and painlessly. Others don’t. This project celebrates the diversity of
older age, the strength, passion and achievements of our elders with humour and
empathy. It also announces that we are alive and kicking – still passionate, still
creating, playing and having fun and being involved, interested, useful members of
the world.

older people in mind. We are living longer, more active lives than ever
before and our communities need to catch up! COTA Victoria is undertaking
an ambitious project to transform Victoria into the world’s first Age- Friendly

needed in their neighbourhoods. This covers outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation,
housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and
