CREATIVE LEARNING MANAGER
Job Description and Person Specification
Accountability:
The post-holder is an employee of The Wiltshire Music
Centre Trust Limited and is directly accountable to the
Artistic Director.
Location:
The job is based at the Wiltshire Music Centre, Ashley
Road, Bradford on Avon, from time to time involving work
elsewhere in and outside the County.
Hours:
The post is part-time 3 days per week and may involve out
of hours work for a 12 month fixed term maternity leave
cover.
Overall Purpose of the Post
To manage the effective delivery of the Creative Learning Programme. This will
also involve maintaining an on-going long-term creative learning strategy
developed with the Artistic Director, that reflects and develops the artistic vision
of Wiltshire Music Centre.
The post holder will support the fundraising team in securing resources to ensure
the development and the sustainability of the programme and work with the
marketing team on communicating and promoting the programme and
corresponding concerts.
The post-holder’s work will include the following types of project:
Schools programme
Small Schools Festival – a partnership project with Wiltshire Music Hub to do a
programme of workshops in small, rural primary schools with local musicians and
composers. This culminates in a series of concerts at WMC and other venues
around the county when the work is performed.
Wider Opportunities/Primary Live – A series of in-school workshops with
primary schools where professional musicians work with pupils
A Letter Home Part 2 – a small scale secondary school WW1 creative
composition project lead by Music Leader Sam Glazer using archive material
from Longleat House to commemorated the vital role it played as a relief hospital
during the war.
Special Educational Needs
Special Schools Festival – a festival organised with musicians skilled in
working with young people at special schools. It takes place every 2 years and
involves workshops in schools culminating in a concert at WMC.
Zone Club – a monthly club for learning disabled adults held at WMC.
Musicians, film artists and dancers facilitate the group in participant led activities.
Young People & Families
Summer Workshops – 3 weeks of particpatory workshops during the summer
holidays held at WMC for young people and families
Music & Science Festival – a project to deliver a day of scientific exploration
involving music demonstrations and participation opportunities for primary aged
children.
Young Curators – a group of local young people under 25 years meeting
monthly to specifically to support the WMC in its promotion and design of
activities for this age group and gain valuable experience of working in a
professional arts organisation
Music Leader – two CPD days focussing on the practical and networking
support for local music leaders (established and early career)
Masterclasses –opportunities for young musicians, amateur musicians or
university students to prepare, perform a piece and receive feedback from a
visiting musician
Key Specific Responsibilities
Strategy
Support the AD in maintaining and implementing the on-going creative learning
strategy of WMC to ensure that the strategy reflects and develops WMC’s artistic
vision.
Work closely with stakeholder organisations including Wiltshire Music Hub,
Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Youth Arts Partnerships, schools, artists and other
arts organisations and agencies across the area, to ensure that developments at
WMC are in line with local, regional and national priorities for children, families,
schools and the wider community. WMC’s strategy will address the need for
creative learning opportunities for young people and other ages as well as
Continuing Professional Development opportunities for teachers, community
professionals and young people as appropriate.
Advise the AD on creative learning priorities and issues.
Partnerships and fundraising
Work closely with the Executive Director, AD, Development Manager and
Marketing Manager to identify and explore opportunities to prepare funding bids
to secure resources for the creative learning programme.
Develop partnerships and collaborations with a range of different institutions as
appropriate to support the development and implementation of WMC’s strategy
through profile raising, collaborative activities, and provision of resources.
Programming and Management
Design an annual programme of creative learning projects for agreement and
approval by the AD which fulfils the objectives and priorities outlined in the
creative learning strategy.
Ensure that the programme has adequate balance in projects so as to achieve
accessibility for all areas of the community including elderly, disabled and
learning disabled people, young people, BME communities and any hard to
reach groups.
Manage and co-ordinate these projects in conjunction with colleagues such as
the AD and Events Co-ordinator and other partner organisations and schools.
This will also involve managing musicians, artists and other freelancers to ensure
that all work is delivered to high standards and meets required deadlines.
Identify appropriate musicians and/or staff to lead elements of the programme,
and oversee project delivery.
Working closely with partners and collaborators, identify and target participants
for each project or activity.
Ensure all contractual arrangements with musicians
schools/groups are in line with current industry practice.

Ensure correct and safe working practices by staff and freelancers, ensuring the
welfare of all staff and participants is in line with WMC’s Health and Safety
Policy.
Ensure that WMC’s Safeguarding Policy and Procedures are adhered to by
everyone working on education and community learning projects, briefing and
supporting colleagues and freelancers where necessary.
Line Management
The Creative Learning Manager is responsible for line managing the Creative
Learning Intern. This is a rolling 12 month intern position which supports the
creative leaning work 3 days per week.
Finance
Take responsibility for the financial management of the creative learning projects
including preparing budgets and monitoring actual income and expenditure
against budgets in liaison with the Finance Manager.
Evaluation and Development of the work
Carry out thorough evaluation and reporting for all projects to ensure that a
development path is identified and followed and that stakeholder and funder
requirements are met.
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of local, regional and national policy and
practice, to ensure that WMC’s creative learning programme is developed in line
with best practice.
Integrate creative learning projects as far as possible across the main
programme and in audience development activities.
Communication & Advocacy
Work closely with the Marketing Manager to ensure the widest possible external
awareness of the creative learning work.
Represent WMC on local, regional and national working groups and committees,
advocating the importance not only of WMC’s work but of music education &
community arts more broadly.
Creative Learning Manager - Person specification:
The Creative Learning Manager is likely to have a degree or professional
qualification and some experience of running education projects in an arts
organisation (preferably with a music focus).
