THE HISTORY One afternoon in 1994, Sinan Tara, then Vice-Chairman of ENKA Holding Company, and Ibrahim Betil, banker and community activist, found themselves sitting together on a plane from Ankara. Mr. Betil shared his vision of a different kind of school in Istanbul, a Turkish school that would be a center of excellence in the cultural capital of the country and an inspiration for schools both within Turkey and throughout the international educational community. Enka schools opened in 1996, with just over 200 kindergarten and grade 1 students. Realizing that true excellence can best be developed over time, the Enka School community decided that adding an incoming class each year would allow for reflective and continuous development. In 2007 Enka reached full capacity as a comprehensive Pre K-12 school. It promotes leadership and responsibility. The academic program uses both the Turkish and English languages as the medium of instruction. In addition, all students study a third language from grades 6-12. A bilingual professional community is fostered within the school. Co-curricular activities at Enka Schools are given great importance and include activities both during and after school. Although all students are required to participate in a co-curricular program at least two hours per week, most of our students are highly committed and choose to spend a great deal more time on a wide variety of activities. Amongst these activities are those which allow the students to get involved not only at the school but also locally as well as internationally. Some of the activities are: Model United Nations (MUN, JMUN), Destination Imagination (DI), International Chain of Awareness (ICI), Southeastern Mediterranean Environment Project (SEMEP), Yearbook, Literary Magazines, Science Club and Magazine, Electronics Club, Web Design, and Eco-Schools. Enka is committed to following a strong International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. It was the first school in Turkey to be authorized by the IBO to offer the PYP. Students in the primary school follow both the PYP and the Turkish National Curriculum. All graduating students from Enka High School will be awarded the Turkish National Diploma. In the high school students in grades 9 and 10 study the Turkish National Curriculum. Additionally at the end of grade 10, students who fulfill the criteria set by the school administration can choose to study the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program alongside their Turkish Diploma. Enka offers its students the opportunity to obtain the internationally recognized and acclaimed International Baccalaureate (IBDP) Diploma in addition to their Turkish National Diploma. The two-year IBDP program students complete in order to receive the IB diploma involves engaging in a challenging curriculum in an interactive way. Students take an active role in their education. Through inquiry and investigation students develop critical thinking skills, and hone their analytical abilities. It should be noted that students in the IBDP must also fulfill all requirements for the Turkish National Diploma and therefore, in addition to studying 3 IB Higher Level subjects, 3 IB Standard level subjects and TOK, they also take an additional 36 Non-IB courses. Community Service is highly emphasized at the core of Enka School’s Mission and this is reflected throughout K-12 as students regularly participate in social and community service. Students volunteer regularly throughout Istanbul and in the past few years they have also taken part in community service projects in Turkey and internationally. For the past two years groups of students and teachers have traveled to Urfa in the southeast of Turkey to participate in a community service project as well as to Nepal to refurbish two village schools.
