Guided reading could include Book Clubs in order to differentiate among different levels of learners. The guided reading piece will be have more feedback this year in order to maintain focus on assessment for “leveling up” students There will also be more work on DRA work with teachers. Using these components, we can be better about identifying where a student is struggling and help us serve them better. b. Behavior Core Program (see materials attached) We need to revamp our behavior program at Southside. This is partly in response to the TELL survey that teachers completed last year where it was identified that Administration support of behavior was an area of need. A school-wide set of rules is where this improvement will begin. Staff will develop a common language with these rules so that all teachers are able to reinforce them with all grade levels. Certified staff will be re-trained on PBIS, Conscious Discipline, etc. Classified staff will have a separate informational session with administration. Conversion to digital behavior on a program like Class Dojo that would be school-wide. This could take the place of Tiger Paw rewards Our big goals in our new behavior management is instill Self-Regulation in students and to keep parents informed Tiffany Roberts asked “What do Leader in Me schools do for behavior management?” 1. Last year, we mistakenly used LiM as a behavior management program, but that isn’t what it is supposed to do. Linda Bullock asked, “Why does the method matter if the behavior is being addressed consistently?” We have individual rooms and ONE school – what needs to be shared? We would like to “plan for what we want” and not “respond to what we don’t want.” Let’s bring Behavior back to our August meeting Steve Gregory: “Has there been any study on Class Dojo implementation success?” Just assigning consequences doesn’t develop community within a classroom. Susie: could we use Dojo as just a whole-class reward? Staff on council noted that the concern with the use of whole-class rewarding (like Tiger Paws) is the lack of consistency amongst staff. One threshold for students (coming into SOUTHSIDE) and not two (one for SSE, one for the grade-level classroom) For the start of the year, can we offer 2-3 methods of behavior management at the start of the year? Then in January, we will move to one system school-wide Southside needs a Tier 1 piece for behavior management to communicate to staff for the start of the year. This will allow for choice among grade levels and opportunity for researching the best method. This could lead to whole-school implementation of one method. Council approves the implementation of a method in each classroom. Teachers will be given 2-3 options to start with at the beginning of the school year and a committee with be charged with researching and deciding on one school-wide method for behavior management. 1.
