Americans and England.
Where We are ….
 England, Spain and France have colonies in
America
 Reminder: England is part of Great Britain
Where We are ….
 As we discuss the French and Indian War, keep
in mind…
 Britain relies heavily upon mercantilism to pay
for Wars (including this one) even though they
have been practicing salutary neglect.
 Almost all American colonists are still loyal to
Great Britain – proud British citizens!
Where We are ….
 As we discuss the French and Indian War, keep
in mind…
 BUT, the boundary lines between the English,
Spanish, French and Native American
territories are blurred…War is brewing…
 The colonies
became involved in
the military &
economic rivalry
between the French
& English
 The French &
Indian War got its
name because
Great Britain was
fighting France and
their Indian allies
 Britain wanted to expand west of Appalachian
Mountains, BUT this land was French territory.
Before the French and Indian War
French & Indian War
 The policy of
mercantilism prevented
the colonies from trading
with anyone but their
“mother country”
 The British rarely
enforced the policies on
the colonies, but it’s
animosity towards the
French led to wars in
Europe (Seven Years
War) & North America
(French & Indian War)
Who Fought???
British and
their
American
Colonists
French
Colonists and
Most Native
Americans
French & Indian War
 The French & Indian War resulted when the
French moved into the Ohio River Valley
French and Indian War (2:02)
Getting Ugly in SC…
 Native frustrations built as more settlers moved
to the Upcountry of SC
 When the French fur traders moved into the
area, the English were quick to form a treaty
with the Cherokee
 Cherokee thought the treaty was an alliance with
the British
 British saw the treaty as an acknowledgement of
their sovereignty
Getting Ugly in SC…
 Their 30 years of peace
was broken during the
French & Indian War
 British failed to protect
the Cherokee from the
French and Creek allies
The Cherokee War
 Cherokee Warriors felt cheated by the
British after the French & Indian War, so
they took white settler’s horses
 The white settlers responded by
attacking the Cherokee
 The Cherokee in turn retaliated
The Cherokee War
 The Royal Governor tried to control the
Cherokee by stopping all trade with them and
taking their peace emissaries as hostages
 Cherokee War last about 2 years & cost many
Cherokee lives
 The war finally ended with a treaty that forced
the Cherokee to give up a majority of their land
and created a boundary that divided the colony
from the Cherokee territory
British Aftermath (Treaty of
Paris)
 The British won the French & Indian War
 Victory resulted in the French losing all
possession in North America
 Spain lost control of Florida to Great
Britain
 Events of the war changed the relationship
of the colonies with Great Britain
After the French and Indian War
Unhappy Colonist
 During the war, Britain enforced their
mercantilist policies on the colonist
 Sugar Act: to stop illegal trade with France
& to raise funds to support war efforts
 Smugglers were prosecuted in vice
admiralty courts (no jury trials)
Unhappy Colonist
 Colonists recognized
British right of
Parliament to control
trade, BUT, saw the
vice admiralty trials as
a violation of the right
to a trial by a jury of
one’s peers as stated in
the Magna Carta and
English Common Law
Big Result of War
 Great Britain incurred major debt because
of the French & Indian War (Seven Years
War)
 Britain believed it was the colonist’s
responsibility to pay for the debt
 Led Parliament to attempt to impose other
taxes…..which the colonist resisted!
