for Georgia Teachers
The workshops the Georgia Council offers are listed in this booklet. GCEE conducts workshops
based on demand.
To register for a workshop, use the form on the last page of this booklet and either mail
OR fax it to GCEE. You can also register online for most workshops at www.gcee.org.

Elementary School
Focus: Economics
A one-day workshop for kindergarten through second grade teachers
Basic economics and personal finance content is introduced with a focus on
teaching the concepts in the Georgia Performance Standards. Lesson plans
specific to each grade level are distributed to address economics and
personal finance.

Econ and Me
A one-day workshop for third grade teachers
Economics content tested on the CRCT based on the GPS is organized
around five 15-minute video programs on DVD. Forty-four activities are
provided to support interdisciplinary understanding of the economics
concepts. Copies of the DVD and the activities are provided to each
participant.

Using Biographies of Great Americans to Teach Economics
A one-day workshop for teachers of first, second and third grade teachers
Basic economic concepts are presented through the lives of the great Americans
identified in the GPS. A story from the life of each individual is presented in two
formats – an adult “read aloud” and a Lexiled student reading. The story is
accompanied by activities which highlight economic understandings.

U.S. Economic History
A one-day workshop for fourth and fifth grade teachers
To understand history, students must understand economic reasoning. Students
apply economic analysis to the events covered in traditional history courses. These
lessons are designed specifically to address the GPS in grades 4 and 5 while
preparing students for the CRCT.

Personal Finance
A one-day workshop for teachers third through fifth grade

Young children are hands-on learners, and teachers will learn to use concrete experiences and
stories about children to teach personal finance concepts. Even the youngest students
understand how their economic decisions are important.

Stock Market GameTM Advisor Training
A full-day introduction for fourth and fifth grade teachers new to the program
GCEE staff show teachers how to help their students learn from the market. In the
ten-week, Web-based stock trading simulation, students apply research and math
skills, practice group decision making, and analyze cause-and-effect relationships.
Teachers attending the workshop are expected to use the SMG with their students
this semester. There is a fee of $7 per team (up to five students) to implement the
program in the classroom.

A one-day workshop for sixth or seventh grade teachers
Teachers explore economic challenges faced by nations in various world
regions (Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East).

Wide World of Trade
A one-day workshop for sixth and seventh grade teachers
Because global neighbors have become increasingly interdependent, it is
commonplace to hear about international trade, trade restrictions, and how
weak or strong the dollar is relative to other currencies. This workshop is
designed to provide insight into the world of international trade. Materials, No

Economics in World Studies
A one-day workshop for sixth and seventh grade teachers
This workshop focuses directly on the three major economic concepts in the
world studies course: types of economic systems; economic growth and
development; and international trade. Teachers will enhance their knowledge
and receive materials directly related to the GPS.

Georgia Economic History
A one-day workshop for eighth grade Georgia Studies teachers
This program brings together an array of resources to help teachers lead
their students in a study of economic history. Teachers get hands-on
experience with the tools of the economic historian. The “Georgia Stories”
video series from Georgia Public Broadcasting, and “The New Georgia
Encyclopedia” supported by the Georgia Humanities Council.

Personal Finance
A one-day workshop for middle school teachers
With this comprehensive investment education curriculum, teachers introduce
students to spending, saving and investing. Students take a critical look at
investment opportunities- mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and more- and uncover
strategies for building lasting wealth.

Built around discussion of economic content and interactive demonstration lessons, this
workshop focuses on economics as the study of choices the people and societies make as they
use scarce resources to meet their wants. This workshop introduces the basic concepts and
skills which are the building blocks for studying economics.

A one-day workshop
Teachers take an in-depth look at microeconomic concepts and theory, and are given the
opportunity to focus on content organized around the GPS microeconomic domain assessed by
the EOCT. Each teacher will receive a DVD of ABC News "Teaching Tools for Microeconomics"
by reporter John Stossel, along with an instructor's manual outlining each of the 15 segments on
the disc.

Teachers take an in-depth look at macroeconomic concepts and theory, and are given the
opportunity to focus on content organized around the GPS macroeconomic domain assessed by

A one-day workshop for high school government teachers
Good citizens understand both the structure of government, the economic role of
government, and the costs and benefits of alternative public policy options. While
market systems generally provide well for organizing the production and distribution
of scarce resources, there are many circumstances in which governments can help
improve economic outcomes and advance societal goals. The program empowers
the teacher in addressing the citizen’s ability to make informed decisions.
