Economics Workshops for Georgia Teachers The workshops the Georgia Council offers are listed in this booklet. GCEE conducts workshops based on demand. To register for a workshop, use the form on the last page of this booklet and either mail OR fax it to GCEE. You can also register online for most workshops at www.gcee.org. PLU = Professional learning unit credits available. 0|Page Elementary School Focus: Economics A one-day workshop for kindergarten through second grade teachers Basic economics and personal finance content is introduced with a focus on teaching the concepts in the Georgia Performance Standards. Lesson plans specific to each grade level are distributed to address economics and personal finance. Materials, No Fee, Sub Econ and Me A one-day workshop for third grade teachers Economics content tested on the CRCT based on the GPS is organized around five 15-minute video programs on DVD. Forty-four activities are provided to support interdisciplinary understanding of the economics concepts. Copies of the DVD and the activities are provided to each participant. Materials, No fee, Sub, Lunch Using Biographies of Great Americans to Teach Economics A one-day workshop for teachers of first, second and third grade teachers Basic economic concepts are presented through the lives of the great Americans identified in the GPS. A story from the life of each individual is presented in two formats – an adult “read aloud” and a Lexiled student reading. The story is accompanied by activities which highlight economic understandings. Students apply economic analysis to the events covered in traditional history courses. These lessons are designed specifically to address the GPS in grades 4 and 5 while preparing students for the CRCT. Even the youngest students understand how their economic decisions are important. In the ten-week, Web-based stock trading simulation, students apply research and math skills, practice group decision making, and analyze cause-and-effect relationships. Teachers attending the workshop are expected to use the SMG with their students this semester. There is a fee of $7 per team (up to five students) to implement the program in the classroom. Materials, No Fee, Sub, Lunch Wide World of Trade A one-day workshop for sixth and seventh grade teachers Because global neighbors have become increasingly interdependent, it is commonplace to hear about international trade, trade restrictions, and how weak or strong the dollar is relative to other currencies. This workshop is designed to provide insight into the world of international trade. The “Georgia Stories” video series from Georgia Public Broadcasting, and “The New Georgia Encyclopedia” supported by the Georgia Humanities Council. While market systems generally provide well for organizing the production and distribution of scarce resources, there are many circumstances in which governments can help improve economic outcomes and advance societal goals. The program empowers the teacher in addressing the citizen’s ability to make informed decisions.
