List the steps of the Scientific Method in the CORRECT ORDER:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
STEP 1: QUESTION
Put an “X” next to the questions that are testable questions, so you are able to use the steps of the Scientific Method
to test them.
_________
_________
_________
_________
_________

_________
_________
_________
_________
_________
Do students who eat breakfast get better grades than those who do not?
Why do frogs jump?
Which boils faster: tap water or salt water?
What makes your heart beat?

Why do birds fly south for the winter?
Do people prefer salty or sweet foods more?
Are tarantulas a poisonous type of spider?
Do middle school students prefer rap music to pop music?
Why are people scared of snakes?
Do students who participate more in class score higher on quizzes and tests?
STEP 2: RESEARCH
Choose one of the questions above that you marked as “testable,” and re-write it on the line:
_________________________________________________________________________________________.
Explain at least 5 things that you could do to research this question.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
STEP 3: HYPOTHESIS
Write a hypothesis for each of the following scenarios in the correct IF….THEN…BECAUSE format. Underline the
independent variable and circle the dependent variable.
1. Squidward loves playing his clarinet and believes it attracts more jellyfish than any other instrument he has
played.
2. Patrick and SpongeBob love to blow bubbles! Patrick found some Super Bubble Soap at Sail-Mart. The ads claim
that Super Bubble Soap will produce bubbles that are twice as big as bubbles made with regular bubble soap.
3. SpongeBob noticed that his favorite pair of pants were not as clean as they used to be. His friend Sandy told him
that he should try using Clean-O detergent, a new brand of laundry soap she found at Sail-Mart.
4. Gary is not the smartest snail in Bikini Bottom and believes he can improve his brain power by eating Super Sail
Snacks.
STEP 4: PROCEDURE
Bubble Time: Patrick loves bubble gum and would like to be able to blow bigger bubbles
than anyone else in Bikini Bottom. To prepare for the Bikini Bottom Big Bubble Contest, he
bought five different brands of bubble gum and needs your help to find the brand that
creates the biggest bubbles. Write an experiment to test the bubble power of the bubble
gum brands and help Patrick win the contest. Make sure you include a list of materials!
Steps of the Procedure:
Materials List:
STEP 5: DATA
Based on your experiment that you designed to test the bubble power of the bubble gum brands and help Patrick win
the contest, you were able to collect data for five different brands of gum and the largest bubbles they can make.
Look at the results in the chart below. Make a bar graph to represent the data from the bubble gum experiment.

STEP 6: OBSERVATIONS
Even though Patrick was concerned about blowing the largest bubble with the different brands of bubble gum, he also
made sure to observe all components of the gum he was testing. Use your 5 SENSES to make at least 5 observations
about the bubble gum in the Big Bubble Contest experiment that Patrick did!

STEP 7: CONCLUSION
What are the 3 parts of a conclusion?
1.
2.
3.
SpongeBob notices that his pal Gary is suffering from slimotosis, which occurs when the shell
develops a nasty slime and gives off a horrible smell. His friend Patrick tells him that rubbing
seaweed on the shell is the perfect cure. SpongeBob decides to test this cure by rubbing Gary
with seaweed for 1 week. After a week of treatment, the slime is gone and Gary’s shell smells
better.
Write a conclusion, including the 3 parts, for this experiment.
