Discussion Board Grading Criteria
•Postings demonstrate critical thought regarding the subject matter
•Substantive notes go beyond "I agree" or "I see your point." Effective responses relate theory or methods to
personal experience, so feel free to comment, critique, and suggest. Try to support what you are saying by
using some of our class material or other resources. Think about quality and frequency as you strike up a
conversation with your fellow classmates. Postings should be in the 100-word range
•You are expected to contribute to each class discussion in a substantive way by posting two substantive
notes (one to address the topic at hand, and another to respond to another student’s posting) to each
discussion question. This is a minimum. When the discussion centers on a lively topic, it is not unusual for
students to read what classmates are talking about and to post multiple notes.
• It should be noted that you will not be able to post messages after the conclusion of each unit. If you have
extenuating circumstances that prevent you from participating in the discussion during a particular unit,
contact your instructor immediately regarding your situation. To be fair to other students you should post
early in the week to allow them time to reply to your posting.
REMEMBER POST EARLY AND POST OFTEN
Writing Assignment Grading Criteria
The following criteria are used to evaluate your assignments:
•Follows description as provided in the course,

There are several writing assignments in this course. It is expected that your academic papers will conform to
the standards for college-level writing and that you will properly cite your work (i.e., give credit to your
sources).
If you need assistance, visit the KU Writing Center or review Rules for Writers (or the Rules for Writers
website).
Late Policy for Written Assignments:
Late assignments are marked down 5% for each week an assignment is late. You have a full seven days to
complete each unit and those turned in on the 8th day or later are considered late. Unit assignments are due
on Tuesday at Midnight ET. If you have extenuating circumstances and would like to turn work in late
without penalty, you must contact me in writing prior to the due date. Assignments will not be accepted
that were due prior to midterm after the midterm grade has been issued (i.e., Unit 5). In addition,
assignments will not be accepted after the last day of class unless you have arranged for an Incomplete
Grade.

The American Mafia
•The American Mafia emerged on the East Coast of the United States
during the late 19th century following waves of Sicilian and Southern
Italian emigration.
•They came as part of a large immigration to the United States, this is
true of the Italian Mafia, as well as similar organizations in the Irish,
Asian and more recently the Russian Immigrants.
•This provided them with an entire population of people who for the
most part were poor as well as alienated from the American
Government as well as Law Enforcement. Many of them came from
societies where Law Enforcement was corrupt so there was no trust
that the police or other government agency could or would protect
them.
The American Mafia
What did the Mafia do to establish themselves in this part of society?
•The Mafia was able to fill the void through protection and providing forced services to
their own people. Many poor Italian immigrants embraced the Mafia as a possible way
of gaining power and rising out of the poverty and anti-Italianism they experienced in
America. Thus making the conditions ripe for Organized Crime to establish itself here
in America.
