Date: 11/02/15 FIRST GRADE NEWS 1st Grade is so much fun! This Week… We are now in Mexico! We learned some cool facts about Mexico (e.g., Mexico introduced corn, chocolate, and chilies to the US). We also wrote about Mexico in our journals and tasted some tortilla chips and mild salsa. We learned some basic greetings and color words. In reading, we took a test on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and discussed our favorite part of the book. We listened to how pumpkins and trees grow via books. The students completed more cut and paste activities via matching and sorting with a comparison web. Our story for the listening station was Big Al. The main objective was to listen, recall details, and draw a detailed picture. In grammar, we are still reviewing adjectives, nouns and verbs. In math, we completed our graphing test. The students practiced adding with a roll/color pumpkin sheet. Math centers were initiated. This involved each table having a different math activity (e.g. activity cards, flash cards/dry erase boards, big brainz on the computer, and base ten review). Our next topic will be 2D/3D shapes. We will also delve into fractions. In science, we are reviewing magnets with hands-on trays of materials. The students love experimenting with them. We made a K-W-L chart (know, want to know, and learned) and listened to some books. We started utilizing Osmo on the iPad. This is an interactive game which uses a camera to facilitate learning. The words’ game was played where students filled in the missing letters for various words. You can check out the video online at Amazon.com or just google Osmo.
