Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.
If you are visiting, please join us in wearing a name tag so that we might greet you.
Our ushers are ready to help! They have large print editions of the Bible, Hymnal,
and today’s bulletin; hearing devices; activity bags with quiet activities
for older children staying in worship; and directions to our safe, loving nursery in
our Monticello Wing for babies and young children.
   Prayer of Preparation
Eternal One,
Silence from whom my words come;
Questioner from whom my questions arise;
Lover of whom all my loves are hints;
Disturber in whom alone I find my rest;
Mystery in whose depths I find healing and myself;
Enfold me now in your presence; Restore to me your peace;
Renew me through your power; and ground me in your grace. Amen. (Ted
Loder)

   Renewing Our Relationship with God
Prayer of Confession
Rev. Clover Beal
Almighty God: you love us, but we have not loved you; you call,
but we have not listened. We walk away from neighbors in need,
wrapped up in our own concerns. We have gone along with evil,
with prejudice, warfare, and greed. Gracious God, help us to face
up to ourselves, so that, as you move towards us in mercy, we may
repent, turn to you, and receive forgiveness; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Attention Bread Bakers!
The worship ministry is planning a special communion service on July 29.
Would you like to have a special part in this service by providing a loaf of
hearty homemade bread to replace what we normally buy? Help create
community by baking bread as an act of prayer, knowing it will be used in
this special way. If you would like to contribute a loaf or two, RSVP to
Jeanette Nemcek, jet0830@aol.com or 216 381-6731, by July 25. We will
need a minimum of 5 loaves; anything over that will be enjoyed at the
coffee hour after the service.
Summer Choir
The Summer Choir meets just once more on July 29. During August, small

in October, after church. We need some help putting the pieces together
– anyone interested in helping plan this series please contact Chris Henry
(cehenry@ameritech.net ) or Clover Beal (pastorbeal@fhcpresb.org ).

2 Samuel 2: 1-17
After this David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of
Judah?” The Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go
up?” He said, “To Hebron.” So David went up there, along with his two
wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
David brought up the men who were with him, every one with his
household; and they settled in the towns of Hebron. Then the people of
Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.
When they told David, “It was the people of Jabesh-gilead who buried
Saul,” David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh-gilead, and said to
them, “May you be blessed by the Lord, because you showed this loyalty
to Saul your lord, and buried him! Now may the Lord show steadfast love
and faithfulness to you! And I too will reward you because you have done
this thing. Therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul
your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over
them.”
But Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbaal son
of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim. He made him king over
Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and over all Israel.
Ishbaal, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over
Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was
seven years and six months. Abner son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbaal
son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. Joab son of Zeruiah,
and the servants of David, went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon.
One group sat on one side of the pool, while the other sat on the other
side of the pool. Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men come forward
and have a contest before us.” Joab said, “Let them come forward.” So
they came forward and were counted as they passed by, twelve for
Benjamin and Ishbaal son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
14
Each grasped his opponent by the head, and thrust his sword in his
opponent’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was
called Helkath-hazzurim, which is at Gibeon. The battle was very fierce
that day; and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by the servants of
David.
Ephesians 2: 13-14, 17, 21
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought
near by the blood of Christ.
For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and
has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. So he
came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those
who were near; In him the whole structure is joined together and grows
into a holy temple in the Lord.
Mark 6: 33-34, 53-56
Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there
on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore,
he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they
were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many
things.
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and
moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once
recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring
the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went,
into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and
begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all
who touched it were healed.
