Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the
field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman,
“Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the
garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of
the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall
not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the
garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the
serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God
knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and
you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the
woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a
delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make
one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some
to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes
of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.

And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves
loincloths. And they heard the sound of the LORD God
walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and
his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God
among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to
the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I
heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid,
because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told
you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of
which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The
woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of
the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman,
“What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The
serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:1-13 ESV)

Secrets Bind Us!
Genesis 3:1-13
One of the worst things we
can do is try to hide or keep
secret our sins!

 Trying to keep our sins hidden within will eat at us,
internally and spiritually.
1. Psalm 32:3-4 – “For when I kept silent, my bones
wasted away through my groaning all day long. For
day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my
strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah.
(ESV)
2. Genesis 42:21-22 – “Then they said to one another, “In
truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we
saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we
did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon
us.” And Reuben answered them, “Did I not tell you not
to sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now
there comes a reckoning for his blood.”(ESV)

The Blessing of Getting Caught
 Numbers 32:20-23 – “So Moses said to them, “If you will
do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD
for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over
the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his
enemies from before him and the land is subdued before
the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of
obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall
be your possession before the LORD. But if you will not
do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be
sure your sin will find you out.” (ESV)
 Despite our efforts to hide and conceal our faults and sins,
they will eventually come to light!
 Yet, there is a blessing that comes from getting caught.

The Blessing of Getting Caught
 If we continue to hide our sins, then we are simply
deceiving ourselves regarding our current condition and
our future residence.
 Yet, when our sins are revealed, there is great potential for
blessing. Note again…

Confession – What is it?
 Confession literally means a ‘saying together.’
 We most often associate confession with an
admission of guilt.
 In our example today, the secret that we are
trying to hide is sin. Confession then is the
readiness to admit that we have sinned.
Genesis 3:1-13
Psalm 32:3-4
Genesis 42:21-22
Numbers 32:20-23
Proverbs 28:13
Galatians 5:19-21
 This sin can be any of the works of the flesh – “immorality,
impurity, sensuality, idolatry…drunkenness…and things
like these.” (Galatians 5:19-21)

To whom should we confess?
 First and foremost – we should confess to God.
 This doesn’t match human logic, but it is required.
 Psalm 90:8 – “Thou hast placed our iniquities before
Thee, our secret sins in the light of Thy presence.”
 Ecclesiastes 12:14 – “For God will bring every act to
judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is
good or evil.”
 Luke 12:2 – “But there is nothing covered up that will
not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.”
 1 Corinthians 4:5 – “...wait until the Lord comes who
will both bring to light the things hidden in the
darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts…”

To whom should we confess?
I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not
cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my
transgressions to the LORD,” and you
forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
Psalm 32:5, ESV
“And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have
sinned against heaven and before you. I am
no longer worthy to be called your son.’”

Confession is good for the soul!
When we are willing to confess and admit the
sins that we have, then we can find the mercy,
compassion and forgiveness that God will
provide.
 1 John 1:9-10 – “If we confess our sins, he
is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
(ESV)
 However, confession must be accompanied
by other things.

Confession is good for the soul!
 Admission of sin is not enough. It
must be accompanied by…
1. …repentance which is a turning away
from sin.

Acts 2:38
2. …baptism into the body of Christ.


Conclusion
 “Choose to hide and die, or…confess and
live!
 There is a confession that we all will make
some day. It is the confession that Jesus is
the Son of God.
 Philippians 2:9-11
 Without God, we are worth nothing. With
God, we are priceless.
