Things we annotate for:
1. Characterization – Is the author using direct or indirect characterization? What have
we (the audience) learned about the character or the character’s personality? Look
in depth at STEAL to identify characterization.
2. Literary Devices – Identify the lit device but also explain the effect or purpose of
using the literary device.
3. Plot – How is the plot structured? How do the events unfold within the story? What
effect does this create (suspense, confusion, mystery, etc.)?
4. Tone – What is the tone of a specific section? How is this tone established?
