 What do you think you will learn about in
this unit?
 How will this unit add to your
understanding of why we do what we
do and why we do it in groups?


• Define socialization.
• Identify various agents of socialization
(e.g., media, family, peers, education,

the socialization process.
• Relate the impact of agents of

Socialization: The process of learning
interpersonal and communication skills
that are in conformity with the values of
one's society.
 Agents of socialization/civilization: The
people, groups, agencies, and
institutions that help shape our ideas,
thoughts, beliefs, and behaviour.

1. Mass Media
2. Education
3. Government
4. Family
5. Peers
6. Religion
The agents of socialization are in no
particular order.
 The influence of the agents of
socialization are different for each of us.
 Institutions are the specific
representatives of the agents of
socialization. Ex. SHS – Education,
Parents/caregivers – Family...


Rank each of the agents of civilization
from one to six in order of their
importance in your life.

How do each one of these influence
your personal ideas, thoughts, beliefs
and behaviour?

Does this mean there
are different agents
of socialization in
different places?
What if those places
are in the same
society? Would the
rules have to be
different for people
who have shown
they cannot follow
the rules?
