HONORS BIOLOGY PROJECT- 3rd-4th quarter READ, SIGN and RETURN. You were given a copy in class. This link is for your reference as the project proceeds. BIO PROJECT- OVERVIEW Biology Project: A research project completed individually or in pairs. This begins in 3rd quarter and is completed in 4th quarter. Students will select a project from the list of suggestions below. Once a student selects a project and decides to work alone or with a partner, there are no changes! Make good and thoughtful choices! Students will need to bring $15 check made out to PFHS or cash to cover the cost of their project. Look over the choices and select the links for lab information and instructions: **Bacterial Investigative Biokit Bacterial Investigative Biokit Lab Instructions http://www.carolina.com/bacteria/bacterial-investigative-biokit-withperishables/154727P.pr?catId=&mCat=&sCat=&ssCat=&question=bacteria+investigative+kit **Disinfectant Sensitivity Biokit Disinfectant Sensitivity Biokit- Teacher Manual Disinfectant Sensitivity Biokit Lab Instructions http://www.carolina.com/bacteria/disinfectant-sensitivity-class-biokit-withperishables/154735P.pr?catId=&mCat=&sCat=&ssCat=&question=bacteria+investigative+kit **Analyzing Yeast Population Growth Kit Yeast Pop. That includes writing your own procedure. Be sure you know what you are getting into. Do not pick a project without reading over the material linked here. You will not be able to change your project. 1. Student Designed Micro-organisms *Analysis Questions Below Bess Beetles- Analysis Questions 1. Describe the natural habitat for Bess Beetles. 2. Describe the Bess Beetles position in the food chain. What do they eat? What eats them? 3. Why are Bess Beetles a good organism to use for research? 4. Why is it important to run experiments using several different beetles? Yeast Population Growth Lab- Analysis Questions Experimentation on Fermentation with different sugars, done in tubes: 1. 2. 3. 4. Name and describe the reaction that produces ATP in cells. Describe fermentation and explain how it is related to the reaction identified in question #1. Compare and contrast lactose and glucose. How is the rate of fermentation in yeast related to yeast population growth? Experimentation done using agar and petri dishes: 1. How do yeast reproduce? 2. What conditions and nutrients are typically needed for yeast to reproduce? 3. What does the nutrient agar provide for the yeast? LAB REPORT AND DISPLAY BOARD INFORMATION: Citation Help Example of a professional research paper The paper has an abstract (paragraph summary) and then once it splits into the 2 columns, that first section, is the background. Note all the parenthetical citations! Everywhere! Also look at the Literature Cited page. Writing Procedures, Experimental Design and Data Table Instructions for writing Procedure, Experimental Design and Constructing the Data Table APA format help- parenthetical citations, literature cited page needed for research papers and article responses. MOST of these assignments are submitted electronically. Lab Report Instruction/Format Formal Lab Report Instructions You should correct your Lab Report when you get it back. You will need the corrected version to use on your display board! You will also need your Research paper for the board. You will need to make corrections to that too! Abstracts must be written for display on your presentation board. Instructions for writing Abstract Presentations boards must be completed. One board per project, therefore if you worked with a partner on the lab report you need 1 board. Board Instructions Check this rubric to be sure you have done everything! RUBRIC for Display Board Remember that you MUST make corrections to things in your report before they are printed and placed on your board. You will likely also want to enlarge the print for each item so that the board is filled nicely. YOU MUST TURN IN YOUR GRADED LAB REPORT WITH YOUR BOARD.
