Spanish 7-8: AP® Spanish Language Plan for Success
Teacher: Mrs. Soto, Room 3210, 3116
Office Hours 7:00-7:30 am, 2:50-3:30 pm Monday-Friday
Pre-requisite: Spanish 5-6H, Spanish Speakers 3-4, or teacher recommendation
The AP® Spanish Language course is conducted in Spanish. We encourage all students
throughout their Spanish studies to practice the target language consistently with their
teachers and peers. They should be able to use the Spanish language to understand
conversations, lectures, oral presentations, newspapers, letters, instructions, Internet
articles, and short stories. Students will express themselves orally by convincing, arguing,
inquiring, and describing. They will also express themselves well in a variety of styles,
using different strategies for different audiences.
Course Outline
To teach the AP Spanish Language course, our school will use many resources: Nuevas
Vistas I & II (Holt, Rinehart, Winston), Una Vez Mas (Prentice Hall), Triangulo
(Wayside), and various Spanish novels. Additionally, we will use AP Spanish Language
Exam Preparatory materials and AMSCO 3rd Year for grammar practice.
The course will be taught in Spanish and students will have extensive practice with
listening, speaking, reading and writing exercises. Weekly quizzes will be given to assess
vocabulary and reading comprehension. Students will also complete 5 Paragraph Essays
concerning the cultural component of the language. The Classwork portion of each
student’s grade will be based on the attached “PERSONAL ASSESSMENT” rubric.

Guidelines/Teacher Expectations—Mrs. Soto
1. Be on time to class, seated, quiet, and ready to begin when the bell rings. Have your
textbook (Spanish classes), paper/pen, and folder at your desk.
2. Don’t talk unless you are supposed to talk. In other words, don’t talk while I’m
talking or when another student is reading or answering questions. You are not the
“movie star” of the class who has his or her own “show”. The objective of the class is
to learn Spanish.
3. Don’t write on the board or overhead projector.
4. Put textbooks back on the counter and folders in the file cabinet, then sit back down in
your seat until the bell rings. Don’t line up at the door.
5. No bad language. No reference to drugs, alcohol, sex, or gangs. No
bad attitudes—I understand you may have had a bad day, but don’t take it out on the
rest of us (including some of your classmates who may have also had issues that day).
If you have had a bad day, tell me at the beginning of class so I have a “heads up” and
I won’t call on you and will let you work.
6. Don’t get up and walk around the room.
7. You get 3 bathroom passes per semester. I’ll record them so use them wisely. Any
further trips to the bathroom will result in a loss of classwork points as you will not
be spending the same amount of time in the class as your classmates.
8. Take off your hats and put away any phones, ipod, iphones, PSPs, etc. Remember, I
am supposed to take them away if I see them.
9. Give me a telephone number where I can reach your parent/guardian during this class
period in case I need to reach him or her. I will be calling during this class time to greet
your parent/guardian and tell him or her how happy I am to have you in my class. If
you give me a fake number I will write you up on a referral for defiance of authority.
You see, I do make positive phone calls home, too.
