Dates and Costs
The Spanish AP exam will be administered on Tuesday, May 8th, 2012. This exam, as well as any other
AP exam, costs $87. You will be required to pay for the exam by April 2nd, 2012 if you wish to take it.
UW Spanish 201 registration will take place during the first half of January. You’ll receive all
registration materials then. The cost of a UWHS course for 2011-12 is $305, plus a $39 UW
registration fee. The course fee covers the cost of all five credits. UW in the High School courses offer
students UW credits at a substantial savings over on-campus rates. This total is less than $70 per
credit: less than half of campus tuition rates.
Keep in mind that you’ll be earning high school credit whether you decide to take the AP exam or pay
for the UW course. The coursework will remain the same, however.
How the Exam is Scored/ How the Course is Graded
The AP exam is scored on a scale of 0-5. Most colleges and universities will award academic credit at the
200-level and higher with a score of 3 or higher. Every college/university awards credit at their
discretion, so it’s not possible to say what credit you will be granted by the school of your choice. I
suggest that you inquire with the institution in question.
The exam consists of reading, writing, speaking and listening sections. It is graded by a trained panel of
teachers in order to provide an objective evaluation of every exam.
Unlike the AP credit, the UWHS course is not based on a single exam, but on participation, essays,
readings and exams. It is a more reliable way to earn university credit.
Transferability of UWHS Credit
Most colleges and universities accept UWHS credit, but you should check with the institution that you
plan to attend to determine what its policy is regarding college credit earned in the high school. To
date, all colleges and universities in Washington State accept UWHS credit with the exception of the
University of Puget Sound and Whitman College.
Organization of the Course
Each unit will take approximately three weeks (7-9 class sessions). You will be expected to do much of
the work outside of class. Much of your time in class will be spent participating in speaking and listening
activities with classmates. We will also spend considerable time developing reading and writing skills.
The following is a general outline of the first semester of the course. Specific materials from each unit

Calculating your course grade (first semester):
Attendance and Participation 15%
Because interaction with other students is crucial to making progress in learning another language,
regular attendance is required. Absences not only slow your progress, but the progress of the class as a
whole. Also, keep in mind that you’ll lose credit when you reach eight absences.
Unit Packets (homework and classwork) 25%
I will prepare packets of work for each unit. They will consist of written and oral activities designed to
prepare you for the AP exam. They will be due at the end of each three-week period. You’ll receive a
unit calendar explaining what you need to study and when assignments are due with every packet.
Essays 30%
Writing is a very important part of the AP exam. We’ll be practicing our writing frequently in order to
improve our skills. One essay will be assigned per quarter in addition to the writing assignments done in
class.
Unit Tests 20%
There will be a short test at the end of each unit. They will be designed to assess your mastery of the
material presented in the unit. There is no final exam.
Listening outside of class 10%
You will be required to listen to radio and/or watch television programs in Spanish for at least one hour
per week. No more than thirty minutes can be music. There are a number of sources on the Internet
and on cable. Here is a short list, and with a little effort, you can find a lot more:
Music:
Video:
batanga.com
Univisión (Ch. 29 on Comcast)(univision.com)
pandora.com
Telemundo (telemundo.com)
cadenadial.com
News:
Radio Nacional de España (rtve.es)
Radio Nacional de Costa Rica (sinart.go.cr)
Second Semester
We will adhere strictly to the UW Spanish 201 syllabus during the second semester of this class. You will
receive a Spanish 201 syllabus at the beginning of the second semester. Please purchase the textbook
(Pasajes Lengua 6th Ed.) and Pasajes Lengua Online Workbook (Available at quia.com) before the
beginning of second semester. You’ll be able to register for the online workbook in November.
Keep in mind that you’ll get out of this class what you put into it. I judge my success by
how successful you are in my class. If you make an honest effort to do well in my class, I
can guarantee you an enjoyable and successful experience learning Spanish.
