Connotation vs. Denotation Bell Ringer
On the white board is an assorted list of team names and
mascots
On a separate piece of paper, I want you to write five of
those team names and mascots down.
For each team name, list character traits associated with
the mascot chosen.

qualities/ character traits of the mascots.
Find Ms. E. with your choices.
Proceed to grab a board marker and write your
top 2 qualities under a mascot.

Connotation Activity/ Bell Ringer
 With your elbow partner, come up with three words that are synonyms but have different
connotations.
 Ex: Smile, Smirk, Grin
 1 of you get a piece of copy paper from the table.
 Fold the paper into three sections.
 Write each word in each section of the paper
 Create a sentence using the first word.
 Use the same sentence for the other two words
 Draw an illustration that depicts the difference between each word.

yours.
 Create a top 3 feeling list with your partner.
 When you have a top 3, find Ms. Ethington.
 Grab a marker from Ms. E.
 Write (pretty) on the white board your number 1 thing to have
in a thesis.
 Don’t worry about repeats.
