Integer Word Problems
In real world situations we use certain words to describe how numbers relate to one another.
We are going to use these words to describe situations and interpret what the problem is
trying to tell us.

: Find ALL the key words in a problem and connect them with the numbers to
create a solvable problem!
Example 5 : The lowest temperature even recorded in Sterling, Virginia is 4
degrees below zero. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Toronto, Canada is
13 degrees below zero. What is the difference between these two temperatures?
Practice Problems – There are three parts to each problem. 1) Circle/highlight all
the key words in the problem. 2) Show the problem the words represent. 3) Solve the
problem.
1. Frank has $550 in his bank account. He withdraws $50 and deposits a check for $80.
What is Frank’s new account balance?
2. The Rowdy Ravens gained 8 yards on their first play, 13 yards on their second play,
and lost 5 yards on their third play. After these three plays, how many yards did they
move the ball?
3. A submarine is 25 feet below sea level. If it descends an additional 8 feet, how many
feet below sea level will it be?
4. In Buffalo, New York, the temperature was -14°F in the morning. If the temperature
dropped 7°F, what is the temperature now?
5. At noon, the temperature in Anchorage, Alaska was 12˚F. By midnight, the
temperature had dropped 19 degrees. What is the temperature at midnight?
6. The lowest temperature even recorded in Sterling, Virginia is 4 degrees below zero.
