Marbury V. Madison – increased the power of the judicial branch of government
The Louisiana Purchase – The Americans depended on the Mississippi River and access to New
Orleans port for trade. It was purchased from France (Napoleon)
Louisiana Purchase doubled the U.S. size
Lewis and Clark explored the new territory to learn about the people and land. They also wanted
to see if there was a river route that could be taken to the Pacific Ocean.
Know about the Native Americans Lewis and Clark encounter and how they helped.
Pikes Expedition – explored the southwest
The U.S. ships faced dangers out in sea – storms; pirates; British and French search and seizure;
British impressment.
Congress passed the Embargo Act to punish British and France and to protect American
merchant ships from capture.
Non-Intercourse Act – new law banned trade only with British and France and their colonies.
British begin to arm Natives with guns (again)
Tecumseh – Shawnee chief wanted to unite the Native Americans against U.S. settlers
Battle of Tippecanoe – U.S. defeat Tecumseh and crush his dreams of a great Indian
confederation.
Call for war – War Hawks, New England Federalist (Know the reasons they were in favor or
opposed)
Congress declared war, James Madison is president during the war of 1812.
War at sea – American vessels defeated British ships several times at sea (USS Constitution)
Commodore Hazard Perry takes control of Lake Erie (Battle of Lake Erie)– British surrender.
With control of Lake Erie, General Harrison marched into Canada and successfully defeated the
British at Battle of Thames.
The Creek war – war with American Indians in the South. Andrew Jackson defeats the Native
Americans at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.
The Treaty of Fort Jackson – ends the creek war and forces Natives to give up land.
Great Britain defeats France and sends more troops (April 1814)
British attack and burn the White house, and other government buildings.
Fort McHenry – British shell the fort for 25 hours. Americans do not surrender and the British
decide to retreat instead of continuing to fight. Frances Scott Key wrote the National Anthem.
The Battle of New Orleans – commanded by Andrew Jackson. Last major battle of the war of
1812.
Treaty of Ghent – officially ended the war of 1812.
