Biology - Friday Harbor Labs Award
Award Amount:
$1,250
The FHL Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates taking classes or
conducting research at Friday Harbor Labs.
The endowments supporting the FHL Award were established in 2005 by Ms.
Dorothy Mills and her daughter, Dr. Claudia Mills, Profs. Katherine Graubard and
William Calvin, Drs. Alan and Marian Kohn, and Prof. Dennis Willows and Dr. Susan
Mahoney.
Who Is Eligible?
o Department of Biology undergraduates enrolled in classes at Friday Harbor Labs
during spring and/or summer quarter.
o Research apprentices who need funding for housing & related costs.
o Applicants must be currently enrolled at the time that the award is made.
How To Apply?

o Show proof of enrollment for classes or directed research at FHL during spring
and/or summer quarter.

Casey Award
Award Amount:
Up to $650
The Casey Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs
associated with travel to present at scientific meetings, including conference
registration fees, transportation, and/or room and board costs. The fund may also
provide support for student research projects if expenses are beyond the ability of
faculty mentors to cover.
This endowment was established in 2001 by the estate of Katharina Casey.
Who Is Eligible?
o Department of Biology undergraduates who need funds for travel to give a talk
or present a poster at a scientific meeting or conference.
o Undergraduates who need funds for research projects.
o Applicants must be currently enrolled at the time that the award is made.

Franco Award
Award Amount:

The Franco Award is an annual prize for the best undergraduate research paper in
the biological sciences.
The endowment supporting this award was established in 1997 by the estate of
John and Dorothy Franco.
Who Is Eligible?
o Department of Biology undergraduates who have conducted research and have
written a paper on the research. The paper does not necessarily have to be
submitted for publication.
o Applicants must be currently enrolled at the time that the award is made.

Frye-Hotson-Rigg Award
Award Amount:
Up to $2600
The Frye-Hotson-Rigg Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates
with costs associated with fieldwork, research supplies, research-related travel,
and/or travel to present at scientific meetings. Awards may only go to students
conducting research using a plant, algae, or fungi system for work in botany,
ecology, evolution, taxonomy, environmental science, or biodiversity.
This award was created in 1962 by faculty, alumni, and friends to honor
distinguished former Botany faculty, Professors Frye, Hotson, and Rigg. A
major contribution also came from the estate of Ruth and Horace Daum.
Who Is Eligible?
o Department of Biology undergraduates conducting research using a plant,
algae, or fungi system for work in botany, ecology, evolution, taxonomy,
environmental science, or biodiversity.

BEACON Lab Research Award
Award Amount:
Up to $500
The BEACON Lab Research Award supports Department of Biology undergraduate
students conducting evolutionary research in the laboratory. The fund may provide
support for student laboratory experiments, computational modeling or for travel to
present such research at scientific meetings, including conference registration fees,
transportation, and/or room and board costs.
This award is part of an initiative from the BEACON Center for the Study of
Evolution in Action (an NSF funded Science and Technology Center). This award is
made possible through matching funds from the School of Medicine made possible
by a gift from Marie Nesbit and Robert C. Nesbit. The overarching goal of BEACON
is to bring together biologists, computer scientists, and engineers to study evolution
as it happens and apply this knowledge to solve real-world problems.

evolution, including lab research or mathematical/computer modeling.

Shawn DeCew BEACON Field Award
Award Amount:
Up to $500
The Shawn DeCew BEACON Award supports Department of Biology
undergraduate students conducting evolutionary research in natural systems.
This award was set up to honor Shawn DeCew, who tragically suffered a fatal
hiking accident in 2010. Shawn was a devoted undergraduate researcher in the
Department of Biology. Besides a tremendously kind disposition, Shawn had a
deep love for photography, hiking and especially nature. To honor Shawn, this
award has been established specifically for Biology undergraduates that plan to
conduct their research in the field.

The May Garrett Hayes Scholarship provides scholarship support for a
Department of Biology undergraduate majoring in Plant Biology or a related
field.

Susan Huscroft Endowed Scholarship
Award Amount:
Full tuition until completion of bachelor’s degree
The Susan Huscroft Endowed Scholarship provides full tuition scholarship
support for an undergraduate student in the Department of Biology pursuing a
career in the medical field who plans to attend medical school and obtain a
Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree. Selection of the recipient is based on academic
merit, financial need, and supplemental information (personal statement and
letter of support).
The endowment supporting this scholarship was established by Dr. William D.
Gillett in honor of his lifelong friend, Susan Huscroft, M.D. This scholarship
will apply for the academic year 2014-2015 and beyond.

Must be planning to apply to medical school and obtain a Medical Doctor
