Earl Warren- Earl Warren served as the fourteenth chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court
from 1953 to 1969.
Fidel Castro- Cuban socialist leader who overthrew a dictator in 1959 and established a
Marxist socialist state in Cuba
JFK- John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), often referred
to by his initials JFK, was the 35th President of the United States, serving from 1961 until
his assassination in 1963.
LBJ- 36th President of the United States; was elected vice president and succeeded
Kennedy when Kennedy was assassinated
Lee Harvey Oswald- designated by a presidential commission to be the lone assassin of John
F. Kennedy
Richard Nixon - Ran against JFK in the 1960 election.
Terms and Events
Warren Commission- The committee that investigated the assassination of JFK
Berlin Wall- Fortified concrete and wire barrier that separated East and West Berlin from
1961 to 1989. It was built by the government of what was then East Germany to keep East
Berliners from defecting to the West.
Bay of Pigs- Invasion, 1961, an unsuccessful invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles, supported
by the U.S. government.

Due Process- Judicial requirement that laws may not treat individuals unfairly, arbitrarily,
or unreasonably, and that courts must follow proper procedures and rules when trying
cases.
Cuban Missile Crisis- a threat to national security that occurred when the Soviet Union
placed nuclear missiles in Cuba
Medicare- Health care assistance to the elderly
Medicaid- Health care assistance to low income people
Miranda Rights- the requirement set by the U. S. Supreme Court in Miranda v. Alabama
(1966) Required that suspects be informed of their rights

Missile gap- a supposed shortage in the number of nuclear weapons possessed by The
United States compared to the number the Soviet Union had
New Frontier- the economic and social programs of the presidency of John F. Kennedy. The
concept of a "New Frontier" epitomized Kennedy's commitment to renewal and change.
Peace Corps- a nonmilitary aid program introduced by John Kennedy
Great Society- President Lyndon Johnson’s legislative plan that included civil rights laws
Space Race- the competition between the US & USSR regarding achievements in the field of
space exploration.
War on Poverty- forty programs that were intended to eliminate poverty by improving
living conditions and enabling people to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty.
Head Start- program for four- and five-year-old children from low-income families.
