Course Description and Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide you with basic knowledge about criminal law.
You will learn the general and special parts of criminal law including justifications (i.e.
self-defense) and excuses (i.e. insanity). You will analyze various criminal cases and
determine what constitutes a crime and who deserves to be punished.
Grading
Exams
50 points each (3 exams)
Paper
20 points
Participation/Attendance
30 Points
Exams: The exam will consist of multiple choice, true/false, and fill in the blank
questions.
Paper: You will be required to write legal briefs. These assignments will provide you
with experience in analyzing criminal trials and how the law is applied to an actual case.
Attendance: 2 points will be deducted for every unexcused absence.
Participation is essential in this class. You are expected to read the material and
participate. The instructor expects a great deal of participation, so it is essential that
you read the assigned material and be prepared to discuss the topic for the day. If you
do not participate, your participation grade will be lowered.
Cheating will not be tolerated! Students who cheat will be referred to the University
Court. Every student should learn what constitutes as plagiarism by referring to the
Student Handbook (http://www.dso.ufl.edu/judicial/procedures/honestybrochure.html)

opportunities available to students who attend class.
Do not text, sleep, eat, or do anything else that will distract me or others. You are
expected to act professionally in the classroom.
Makeup exams will be provided to students who have a university recognized excused
absence such as: illnesses with a doctor’s excuse, serious family emergency, and
