COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an AS100 (freshman) introductory course to AFJROTC and is part one of a twocourse curriculum plan which blends Aerospace Science, Leadership Education, and the North Carolina Healthful Living
courses into one class. Students must complete both AFJROTC/Healthful Living I and AFJROTC/Healthful Living II in
order to fulfill the North Carolina high school Healthful Living/Physical Education (PE) requirement for graduation. In
this course, students develop leadership and self-discipline through class instruction, hands-on activities, military drill,
and physical fitness activities. Academic instruction covers history of aviation, leadership education, drill and
ceremonies, and wellness/healthful living:
Aerospace Science: A Journey into Aviation History The aviation history course focuses on the development
of flight throughout the centuries. It starts with ancient civilizations, then progresses through time to modern day. The
emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the
Air Force; and a brief astronomical and space exploration history. It is interspersed with concise overviews of the
principles of flight to include basic aeronautics, aircraft motion and control, flight power, and rockets. Throughout the
course, there are readings, videos, and hands-on activities to guide in the reinforcement of the materials.
Leadership Education I: In Leadership Education I: Citizenship, Character and Air Force Tradition, cadets
are introduced to AFJROTC while building a foundation for progressing through the rest of the program while also
instilling elements of good citizenship. Communication skills, problem solving, human relations, and logical thinking
are a strong part of this course. The primary focus is on cadet and Air Force organizational structure; uniform wear,
customs, courtesies, and other military traditions, health and wellness, fitness; individual self-control; and citizenship.
Drill and Ceremonies: In Personnel Drill and Ceremonies, the cadets learn military customs and courtesies,
basic military marching, and ceremonial drill movements, and participate in flag raising/lowering details.
Wellness/Healthful Living: In Wellness/Healthful Living, cadets are required to participate in physical
education training/activities to include fitness training and individual/team sport skills. The Healthful Living
Health components include the study of assessing one’s own health, nutrition and weight management, substance
abuse, and conflict resolution. A North Carolina certified Health/PE instructor teaches the Healthful Living
portion of the curriculum. The Reproductive Health, High School curriculum (excerpts provided by the
instructor) covers the abstinence and sexuality portion of the North Carolina health curriculum. Excerpts from this
curriculum will cover the male and female reproductive systems, benefits of abstinence, healthy relationships,
maturity, external pressure, personal boundaries, contraceptive myths, and common STD’s. To receive Healthful
Living credit, a cadet must successfully complete both AFJROTC/Healthful Living I (part 1) and
AFJROTC/Healthful Living II (part 2) courses.

20% - Leadership Education
20% - Uniform Wear
20% - Tests
10% - Wellness/Physical Training (participation plus wear of physical training uniform)
10% - Healthful Living

Pencil and blue or black ink pen
WEAR AND CARE OF THE AIR FORCE UNIFORM:
Cadets are issued a clean uniform identical to the one worn by active-duty Air Force personnel. Wearing the
uniform is a Department of Defense requirement for all JROTC units. Cadets are required to CORRECTLY
wear their uniform ALL day on “uniform day” which is normally every Tuesday. Failure to properly wear
the uniform as required will result in failure of the course regardless of their academic standing or grade
average. Please read, sign and return the attached uniform contract.
WEAR OF PHYSICAL TRAINING UNIFORM:
Cadets are required to participate and wear the issued AFJROTC physical training uniform (shirt and shorts)
with athletic shoes on “PT day” which is normally every Friday throughout the semester. If a student can’t
participate for health reasons, a doctor’s note is required for exemption. Uniforms are issued to each cadet at
no cost to the cadet. Cadets are responsible for the proper maintenance and laundering of their PT uniform.
There is a replacement cost for shirts ($5) and shorts ($10) lost and/or damaged beyond repair. Please read,
sign and return the attached Health/Wellness screening and participation consent form.
GRADING PRACTICES/CONSEQUENCES/RECOVERY/REMEDIATION OPPORTUNITY:
In order to give each student the best possible learning experience, it is imperative that all parties are held
accountable for success (or failure) in the classroom. Responsibility falls on each student, their parents, and their
team of teachers. We understand that a student may struggle to master some concepts in a timely
manner. Therefore, our Academic Recovery Process is accessible to all students and offered when:
- the student is attending class on a regular basis
- the student has given sufficient first effort on assignments
- the student completes recovery in a timely manner
In accordance with School Policy and AFJROTC guidelines, the following grading practices, consequences,
recovery, and remediation practices are established for students in NC-939:
a. Demonstration of Mastery. A grade of 70% is considered demonstration of mastery for classwork,
assignments, quizzes, and tests. Students failing to demonstrate mastery in any area will be afforded an
opportunity for remediation and grade recovery.
b. Remediation and Grade Recovery. Students will be afforded the opportunity of “re-takes” to remediate any
grade that falls below the 70% skill mastery threshold. The window of opportunity for re-takes is open up to two
weeks after the due date/completion date for any classwork, assignment, quiz, or test. The final grade for any
remediated effort will be the averaged results of the two scores (initial attempt + retake=final grade). Missed or
late assignments can be turned in/accomplished within two-weeks of the established due date. Late work will be
accepted with a 5-point deduction for each day late. A final grade of zero will be recorded if no work is
completed and/or turned in within the two week grace period. Missed assignments will be entered into the
Powerschool gradebook as a failing grade/missed assignment until the missed assignment has been turned in.
c. Uniform Wear, Grooming Standards, Discipline violations. Cadets are required to wear their uniform all day
on “uniform day” which is normally every Tuesday. Cadets with an excused absence are allowed to make-up the
uniform wear on Wednesday or Thursday of the same week (or the first day upon return from an extended
absence) with 100% maximum points still possible. Cadets receive a lower grade when they choose to wear their
uniform on a make-up day (Wednesday = 90% max points, Thursday = 80% max points). Cadets who have
significant or recurring violations to the uniform wear policy will be subjected to additional administrative
disciplinary action. The first unexcused uniform wear will result in a letter of counseling and parent contact.
Additional failures to wear the AFJROTC uniform will result in additional administrative disciplinary actions.
Any NC-939 cadet who has more than three unexcused uniform wear dates with no make-ups completed will: (1)
have all cadet rank suspended; (2) be removed from any leadership position and (3) no longer be considered a
cadet “in good standing” and (4) may fail the course and be considered for removal from AFJROTC for
indifference to training. Only cadets in good standing are eligible for awards and decorations and to participate in
any extra-curricular activities. Failure to return to “in good standing” status within a reasonable time period
(ASI/SASI discretion) will result in failure of the course and a recommendation for removal from the AFJROTC
cadet program.
d. Two In-School Suspensions (ISS) or one Out of School Suspension (OSS) will result in a reduction in rank and
a loss of field trip privileges for any upcoming CIA/field trip.
e. Failing to maintain an overall “C” average for all classes will result in a loss of “good standing status” and a
loss of field trip privileges for any upcoming CIA/field trip. This also means we will not give approval for cadets
to miss class to attend other field trips.
f. Parental Communications: Grades in Powerschool will be updated on a weekly basis. Phone calls or e-mails
will be made when the following occurrences are observed: 3 absences, student in danger of failing, student has
not turned in a major project, behavioral concerns, and excessive tardies. Please fill out the parent contact
information sheet to help with parent-teacher contact.
ACHIEVING SUCCESS:
 Follow SHS and WCPSS classroom rules and procedures
 Be on time and in seats by the time the tardy bell rings
 Come prepared with binder, books, pen, pencil, and paper
 Show respect for self, others, and environment
 Actively participate in class discussions and activities
 Wear your uniform proudly, all day on Uniform Day
 No earrings worn by male cadets while in uniform/PT uniform while in AFJROTC class
Parents and students – please complete and sign the attached syllabus agreement of understanding, health/wellness
cadet participation consent form, and uniform contract.

MEMORANDUM TO: Parents/Guardians of Sanderson HS AFJROTC Cadets
FROM: Colonel Sammons and CMSgt Price
SUBJECT: Air Force Junior ROTC Program and Uniform Requirements
1. Welcome to the Sanderson High School Air Force JROTC program. The mission of the AFJROTC
program is to "Develop Citizens of Character Dedicated to Serving Their Nation and Community."
Our citizen-building process is accomplished through several academic and extracurricular activities.
These activities provide cadets with opportunities to develop their leadership skills, practice public
speaking, plan and organize community-service projects, take Curriculum-In-Action (field) trips, and
participate in military drill and ceremonies. We encourage cadets to stay involved in corps’ activities
(such as the drill team) ALL YEAR, even though they take our class only one term!
2. In addition to citizenship-building activities, AFJROTC provides academic instruction in a variety of
aerospace science subjects. These subjects are designed to acquaint cadets with the history of aviation,
the fundamentals of flight, the national space program, and the study of the diverse cultures of our world.

3. Enormous emphasis is placed on continuing to build strong character traits such as respect for self,
others, the school, the American Flag, and our Nation. Additionally, we stress the importance of selfdiscipline, responsibility, accountability, honesty, initiative, and pride in self, family, school, and
Nation. We teach the Air Force Core Values of "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in
All We Do."
4. Air Force JROTC is not a school program used to “whip problem students into shape." On the
contrary, AFJROTC is an elective designed for students who sincerely desire to be part of a highquality, highly structured and disciplined school program. It is a program students (and you) select.
5. Cadets are required to properly wear the Air Force uniform one-day per week while participating in
the AFJROTC program. This is directed by the contract between the Air Force and Sanderson High
School. The uniform is provided at no cost to the cadets. We do require that cadets take responsibility
for keeping the uniform in good condition, cleaned, and pressed so our corps looks professional. Please
read, sign and return the attached AFJROTC UNIFORM CONTRACT.
6. Please come see us in Room 197, or call us at (919) 571-6887. Our e-mails are dsammons@wcpss.net
and mprice2@wcpss.net. Visit the corps’ Web site linked through the Sanderson HS site.

Cadets are issued (free of charge) a clean uniform identical to the one worn by active-duty Air Force
personnel. Each cadet has or will acknowledge his/her responsibility for all uniform items issued to them. (Note:
Dollar value of a complete Air Force uniform is $285.00). During the year, all uniform items must be dry cleaned
as needed with the exception of the shirt/blouse, which is washed in a washing machine then lightly pressed. The
shirt/blouse should be washed after each time it’s worn. There is a $20.00 non-refundable uniform
maintenance/activities fee required at the beginning of each term (once a year for cadets taking AFJROTC
all year). This fee includes a corps’ T-shirt. Please send a check, made out to SHS AFJROTC, with this signed
contract.
Cadet "UNIFORM DAY" is Tuesday of each week. Cadets are inspected to ensure proper wear and
personal appearance standards are met. Wearing of the uniform is a critical part of the cadet's involvement in the
corps and it counts as 20% of their overall grade. Failure to wear the uniform on the prescribed uniform day will
result in a failing grade unless worn on Wednesday or Thursday of the same week (or the first day they return to
school after an excused absence). Cadets receive a lower grade when they wear their uniform on a make-up day
(except for an excused absence).
NOTE: Cadets who fail to wear the uniform "THREE" times during a term, without making
up the missed days, will be in jeopardy of receiving a failing grade for the entire course,
regardless of academic standing within the class.
{MALE GROOMING STANDARDS}
Hair must be groomed as to present a tapered appearance. It cannot touch the ears or the shirt collar, and cannot
exceed 1 and 1/4 inches in bulk at any point. Facial hair is prohibited except that mustaches may be worn if
properly trimmed. The mustache cannot extend below the top of the upper lip or pass the corners of the lips.
Sideburns cannot extend below the lower opening of the ear. Earrings, nose rings, and tongue rings are not
permitted when participating in AFJROTC activities. A white "V" neck T-shirt and black socks are required
when in uniform. Failure to meet grooming standards, to include the proper haircut, can result in failing grade for
uniform day. However, the cadets will be able to fix the discrepancy with 24-hours.
{FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS}
Hair must be worn in a style, which does not extend below the lower, back edge of the collar and permits the
proper wear of the hat. Cadets will not color their hair unless approved by the AFJROTC instructors in accordance
with Air Force standards. Minimum hair length is ¼ inch, to a maximum bulk of 3 inches from scalp. Small
earrings are permitted, but they must be studs (gold, silver, pearl, or diamond) with only one earring in the earlobe
of each ear. No dangling or circular earrings,
tongue rings, nose rings, or eyelid rings. Some female cadets may wish to style their hair with extensions, if done
so, hair standards must still meet the Air Force uniform requirement of no more than 3 inches in bulk. Failure to
meet grooming standards, to include a proper haircut, can result in failing grade for uniform day. However, the
cadets will be able to fix the discrepancy with 24-hours
Upon completion of AFJROTC cadets are required to return their uniform service coat, pants, and
lightweight jacket with receipted-proof of dry cleaning (not just in a plastic bag) in order to facilitate issuance of
clean uniform to another student.
Please acknowledge that you have read and understand the uniform wear and grooming policies,
the grading criteria, the uniform maintenance fee, and will comply with all requirements.
