Course Description:
Health is a semester course that will guide students through the many dimensions of wellness.
Students will develop skills needed in confronting difficult situations; understand health prevention
and promotion techniques that will establish a solid personal health education; and become
health literate in making positive and healthy decisions.
Class Expectations:
1. Students are expected to be respectful of the rights of others. Students should raise their hand
before speaking and be quiet while others are speaking. Respect all property in the classroom. If
it’s not yours, leave it alone.
2. Students are expected to follow the school rules and codes. (See the Montgomery Catholic
High School Student Handbook for information and school policies.)
3. Students will be in the classroom and in their seat before the tardy bell. Three tardies will
result in detention.
4. Students are expected to be present and organized every day. Students should have all
materials before class including their books.
5. No cell phones or other electronic devices, food, gum or drinks are allowed in the classroom.
Water is allowed if disposed of properly.
6. Attendance is an ESSENTIAL part of learning! Students are responsible for missing work
when they return from an absence. It is the students’ responsibility to see me as soon as possible.
If the student is absent the day before a known assignment is due, you will still be responsible for
that assignment on that returning day. (test, projects, etc.)
7. Students will be given two days to complete makeup work.
8. If a student misses a test, the test must be made up within two school days or a zero will be
given.
9. Cheating/plagiarism will NOT be tolerated!
10. Homework will be given most days to be completed by the following class period or otherwise
determined. Students may obtain 75% credit for assignments that are one day late. Specific
homework formats will be discussed in class with the students. If the assignment is turned in
without the correct format, the student will be asked to redo the assignment or will not receive
credit.
11. Students are expected to use class time wisely.
12. Students should give respect to gain respect.
2
13. Students should come prepared mentally, emotionally and physically each day and ready to
learn!

Dear Parents or Guardians,
I look forward to working with your student this semester. In order to make this the most
rewarding semester, we must work together as a team. In my classes, I hold each student
accountable for his or her own responsibilities. These responsibilities include putting school first,
completing assigned work, staying organized, keeping up to date with upcoming projects and
tests, and finally letting parents in on the happenings of the class.
This required course emphasizes the practical application of knowledge to healthful daily living.
Wise decision-making skills are developed as students explore health related areas such as
wellness, mental health, nutrition, eating disorders, physical fitness, substance abuse, human
sexuality, growth and development, reproductive health, communicable diseases including
sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS, abuse and violence prevention, sexual harassment,
and consumer health decisions. Students are encouraged to take personal responsibility in
making healthy decisions in regard to their physical and emotional well-being. Personal
assessments, role-playing, problem solving, and many physical hands on activities reinforce the
learned material.
Please review the syllabus with your child, sign it, and return it to me by the end of the week
(Friday, August 15). In this way, each of us is aware of the expectations, and the students realize
they are responsible for their own actions. Additionally, I would appreciate any information that
you would like to share regarding your student that would help me get to know them better as
learners. If you find any of the above topics to be offensive to your child, please contact me and
we can make arrangements. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me or set
up a meeting. I am truly looking forward to an exciting and productive semester!
Sincerely,
Abigail Beesley
