St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin September 12 & 13, 2015 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time MESSIAH Jesus looks to his near and dear friends for a reading of the times. He learns that people who have seen and heard him are abuzz with news that he may be one of the great prophets finally returning to their once proud nation. This is the best people can hope for. It is no surprise that a subjected and humiliated people with a long memory of good times would look for a savior-king. They are vulnerable enough to snatch and make their leader anyone with boldness, arrogance, and power. This is a dangerous temptation, and Jesus knows it. So who is he, then? Is he one of those great men of the past sent by God for deliverance? He is more. He is, by his own public admission, the Messiah, God’s anointed one. That is the truth of his being. It is a quiet truth to be held by them until it reveals itself in God’s own time. SERVANT AGAIN Because we have the whole gospel two millennia later, we know that the Messiah, the Christ, can claim this title. And we know that a price is exacted. We know the price is his death leading to life. He is the suffering servant of whom Isaiah spoke. He is the one who has heard and obeyed God’s word and who looks to the Lord God for help. And we who confess him as Messiah and Lord must imitate him in clear, down-to-earth ways, as James says, “What good is it . . . if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” (2:14). We must walk the talk. If we are to walk in the presence of the Lord, we must reach out to help our neighbor. If we are to dwell in the land of the living, we must assist others to attain the same goal. Today’s Readings: Isaiah 50:5–9a; Psalm 116:1–6, 8–9; James 2:14–18; Mark 8:27–35 Fr. St. James challenges the early Church to allow their works to be true expressions of their faith in Christ. Faith and works go hand in hand to bring about the kingdom of God. If my faith is 'true' my life will reflect it daily in my words, my work, classroom, kitchen, the store, my neighborhood. Elsewhere it is said; "they will know us by our love!" What is the reason I strive to do good, why am I generous to the poor, why do I greet those I encounter, friend and foe alike? If I do these simple good things because that is what is expected or for any other reason than to express my love for God and others, all the good I do looses the strength and power that comes from God to change me and the world. It is not easy as Jesus tells us and proves through His example. To love God and my neighbor is to deny myself and to do so willingly and eagerly. That's hard work and we cannot do it without deep faith. God bless and let us pray for each other as we strive to accomplish the good works of God.... Fr. Tully St. Michael and St. Francis Xavier Parish are participating in the Archdiocesan CALLED BY NAME, a program of vocation awareness that begins this weekend. This program offers an opportunity for us to pray for vocations; to recognize gifts and potential for leadership and service in members of our parish; and finally, to call forth and encourage these members to share their gifts in priesthood and consecrated life. Perhaps you know a single man or woman (fourteen years or older) who would, in your opinion, have the qualities to become a priest, sister or brother. Please recommend this person by filling out a paper nomination form and placing it in the collection basket or submit online at HearGoldsCall.com. Thank you. For the weekend of September 12/13, 2015 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. James asks what our love for Jesus Christ can possibly mean if it does not result in action on behalf of our neighbor. He suggests that that faith is demonstrated most acutely in care for the needy, the suffering, and the underprivileged. Stewardship includes proclaiming the Good News by putting our faith into action on behalf of others. In what ways have we been willing to make sacrifices and renunciations for the sake of Jesus Christ and our neighbor? For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and understanding. Step 1: Listen to the Word: As you hear it proclaimed today what strikes you? What is there in this story that touches your own heart? Step two: Look into your Life. Children: What do you think it means to follow Jesus’ footsteps? Youth: Who is Jesus in your life? Adults: What is the cross that you carry today? How do you follow Jesus in the workplace and at home?
