Important Course Information Tessa Distel – tessa.distel@wchcs.org Algebra 1 Weighted Grading System: Homework/ Classwork (Collected daily and recorded in progress book) – 10% Assessments (Vocabulary Quizzes, Weekly Quizzes, Unit Tests) – 50% Midterm Exam (Given at end of 1st semester) – 20% Final Exam (Given at end of 2nd semester) – 20% Retake Policy: Retakes are utilized to assess student mastery on major summative assessments after first failing to demonstrate the foundational information needed to progress through the curriculum. Understanding that “Life” happens or that the content hasn’t been transferred to longterm memory and the student isn’t able to apply the major concepts, students will be able to retake 2 major summative assessments (Unit Tests) per semester. The number 2 is a balance of student responsibility and the opportunity to re-learn, study and apply major concepts in a curricular area of study. The use of spiraling key components throughout a course of study along with the use of formative instructional practices while differentiating the curriculum should reduce the necessity for retakes and enable the instructor to better meet the needs of all learners.
