Homework Project Science/Ms. Monroe Due: May 17, 2013 Activity: 3-D diorama and suitcase Subject: Biomes Biomes studied: Tropical rainforest, Desert, Tundra, Taiga, Temperate decidious rainforest, Grassland. Requirements: diorama must be 3-D use any size shoe box (but not larger than a shoe box, please) Include biotic factors that make the environment unique (plants and animals) Include abiotic factors that make environment unique (non-living - like dirt, sand, etc) Any animals in the biome must be made by you and not purchased at a store Any plants used may be gathered from nature but not purchased at a store Label your diorama with the type of biome as well as your name and period on the back side of your diorama so we cannot see it when looking at the front. Complete the “Biome Suitcase” Be ready to present your diorama and suitcase to the class. Based on the information you provide in your suitcase, we will try to guess which biome you have chosen Biome Suitcase: You will need to put the following items in your “Suitcase.” How you construct your suitcase will be up to you. 1. Label a 3 x 5 index card “Example.” Choose a well-known example of the biome represented in your diorama (example: desert – Sahara). Put the name and picture of the well-known biome on the front of a 3 x 5 index card and map that shows the location on the back of the card. 2. Label a 3 x 5 index card “Plants”. Tell about the unique set of vegetation in that well-known biome. Include pictures on the back of the card. 3. Label a 3 x 5 index card “Animals”. Each biome has a unique set of animals that thrive. Tell about the animals in the well-known biome and include pictures on the back. 4. Label a 3 x 5 index card “Characteristics”. Each biome is equipped with a unique set of characteristics. Tell about the characteristics that distinguish the well-known biome from others. Don’t forget to include pictures on the back of the card. 5. Label a card “Climate”. Tell about the temperature range and precipitation and how they affect the well-known biome. Use a chart, table, or graph to support your information. 6. Label a card “People”. Find out about the types of people that have lived in this biome long before cars, electricity, and the Internet. Write details on the 3 x 5 index card. 7. Label a card “Changes”. Describe the changes that have occurred in the well-known biome over time. Propose a theory as to what that biome will be like in the future. Grading: Diorama (60 points): Suitcase (40 points): 20 points possible for biotic factors, 20 points possible for abiotic factors, 20 points possible for creativity and accuracy 5 points possible for each card 1 – 6 (30 points total) 10 points possible for card #7
