ROOM LEADER
JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Requirements



Minimum 18 years of age
High school diploma or equivalency (GED).
A current preschool, center-based Child Development Associate Credential (CDA); or an associate,
baccalaureate, or advanced degree in early childhood education; or an associate, baccalaureate, or
advanced degree in a field related to early childhood education with preschool teaching experience is
preferred.

National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is preferred.
Must be able to do the following:








Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including interpersonal skills, oral communication,
ability to express ideas clearly, crucial conversations and tact.
Demonstrate dependability, including high work ethic, dedication, timeliness, professionalism,
accountability, and commitment.
Demonstrate problem solving, critical thinking and listening, leadership and presentation skills.
Follow basic principles of early childhood education,
Establish and maintain effective, working relationships with children, parents, staff, and program
specialists.
Lift children up to 50 pounds and use mobility and transfer equipment to lift children with disabilities.
Work with children with physical, intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and/or special
healthcare needs.
Pass a background check, including criminal records and child abuse registry.
Nature of Work:





Hours of work and schedule are determined on a weekly basis, based upon program needs.
Work involves the responsibility for developing and implementing an educational setting for children in
the assigned age group.
The teacher is responsible for direct supervision and evaluation of the teacher assistant and any
volunteers in the classroom.
The teacher shall be supervised and evaluated by the center director.
The teacher shall receive training and technical assistance from the center director, center nurse and the
program specialists.
Training Requirements:
All staff must complete trainings as outlined in employee handbook and additional trainings as needed to meet
the needs of the children in assigned group. For full-time employees, these trainings and certifications will
include:

Maintain current certification for Iowa’s training for the mandatory reporting of child abuse; infant, child
and adult CPR; and infant, child and adult first aid.

At least ten contact hours of training in the first year of employment, and six contact hours of training
annually from one or more of the following topical areas: child development, guidance and discipline,
developmentally appropriate practices, nutrition, health and safety, communication skills,
professionalism, business practices, and cross-cultural competence. Training received for
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, mandatory reporting of child abuse, and universal
precautions shall not count toward the ten contact hours.
At least four hours of the ten contact hours of training in the first year and two of the six contact hours
in following years shall be received in a sponsored group setting. The remaining hours may be received
in self-study using a training package approved by the Department.
All new staff are required to complete the New Staff Orientation self-study training modules within the
first six months of training. Each module is to be submitted to the director after completion for review
and feedback. These modules will be submitted to the Iowa State University Extension for training
credit. This training meets the requirements for self-study training packages.
Medicaid program rules state that Center Staff Training shall supplement educational and experience
requirements in Iowa DHS rule 441--109.6(237A) and shall enhance the staff’s skill in working with the
developmental and cultural characteristics of the children served. Staff is required to complete center
trainings and demonstrate competency in skills required to provide for any special needs care they will
be providing. As a provider of Medicaid Waiver services, center staff trainings are required to include:
(1) Consumer rights.
(2) Confidentiality.
(3) Provision of consumer medication.
(4) Identification and reporting of child and dependent adult abuse.
(5) Individual consumer support needs.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:










Plans and maintains a safe, clean, learning environment, and assures the well-being and safety of
children in her/his care.
Plans and implements activities with children, appropriate to the developmental needs of the assigned
age group.
Develops and implements weekly lesson plans that are consistent with the program curriculum.
Supervises guides, and models appropriate behavior and teaching techniques for teacher assistant and
volunteers under her/his supervision in the classroom.
Maintains a cooperative attitude of working together with special education teacher, teacher assistant,
volunteers, parents, and program specialists in planning and implementing classroom activities.
Plans and implements daily activities that engage children in literacy, language, and math activities using
songs, books, and games that are integrated with the theme/topics.
Uses assessment information for individually interacting with children during learning center times and
other times for teaching identified concepts.
Maintains accurate and current assessment information noting child’s progress across all developmental
domains utilizing anecdotal notes and/or examples of children’s work.
Accurately completes all paperwork, daily care sheets, parent/teacher conference forms, lesson plans,
attendance forms, food program documentation, medication administration forms, incident reports,
special needs care documentation and other documentation as assigned by director.
Reviews child’s master file, documents parent contact, and files paperwork upon completion.

Encourages and models language expansion, extended learning and problem solving strategies
throughout the day.
Implements behavior plans designed by a mental health specialist, staff nurse and/or resource teacher
and reports on the effectiveness of the plan after sufficient time for implementation.
Maintains discipline and supervision of children during all program activities as outlined in the center
Discipline Policies and Procedures.
Protects all children from physical punishment or verbal abuse by anyone in any program activity, and
immediately reports any such incident to the center director or person in charge.
Observes children to detect signs of illness, injury, emotional disturbance, learning disorder, speech
problem, or other special need and reports these signs immediately to the center director for needed
follow-up.
Observes children for any suspected or disclosed signs of child abuse or child neglect and reports them
immediately to the center director in accordance with the center Child Abuse/Neglect Reporting Policy
and Procedures.
Sits with children during all meal times and eats the same meal or snack as the children, providing a
model for good nutritional habits (unless prohibited from doing so by dietary or doctor’s concerns).
Holds two parent/teacher conferences per year as designated on the planning calendar to share each
child’s progress with parents.
Works cooperatively with the teacher assistant, and support staff assigned to her/his classroom as a
team to involve all parents with their children and to encourage the active participation of all parents in
the program.
Maintains 90% average daily attendance, discounting excused absences, each month.
Works cooperatively with the director following up on all children who are absent, contacting the
parents to determine the reason for the absence.
Safeguards all classroom supplies and equipment, and accounts for any misused, damaged, or missing
supplies or equipment.
Attends training opportunities provided by the center and all staff meetings called by the center
director.
Cleans and sanitizes classroom equipment, toys, furniture, bedding, and work surfaces weekly and as
needed.
Maintains confidentiality of client, staff and center information according to center policies and state
and federal laws.
Performs any other tasks deemed necessary by the center director.
Job Classification and Compensation:
This position will be assigned to the current pay plan on the basis of credential, degree, or certification.
This is a non-exempt position, meaning that it is not exempt from the hourly wage and labor laws.
It is understood that the special education teacher will work the hours assigned by the center director.
