Promotion Board Review Packet

The purpose of this packet is to allow cadets to learn or reaffirm their knowledge on the Corps and structure of the Air Force in preparation for the

Promotion Board. Please note, you ARE NOT allowed to bring a “cheat sheet” or any other material while under review with the board. It is each cadet’s individual responsibility to learn the material. However, I highly encourage cadets to study or quiz one another over the subjects in this packet. Remember teamwork is key within the Corps! Many of you will experience going through the Promotion Board process for the first time come January 21, 2015 and may be intimidated by the unfamiliarity of the process. However, if one comes prepared and ready for the process, it not only shows dedication but also shows your initiative to study. I wish the best of luck to all of you in your endeavors!

Sincerely,

C/1st Lt. Hunter Granillo

Air Force Song

Off we go into the wild blue yonder,

Climbing high into the sun;

Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,

At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun! (Give 'er the gun now!)

Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,

Off with one helluva roar!

We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!

Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

Additional verses:

Minds of men fashioned a crate of thunder,

Sent it high into the blue;

Hands of men blasted the world asunder;

How they lived God only knew! (God only knew then!)

Souls of men dreaming of skies to conquer

Gave us wings, ever to soar!

With scouts before And bombers galore. Hey!

Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

Bridge: "A Toast to the Host"

Here's a toast to the host

Of those who love the vastness of the sky,

To a friend we send a message of his brother men who fly.

We drink to those who gave their all of old,

Then down we roar to score the rainbow's pot of gold.

A toast to the host of men we boast, the U.S. Air Force!

Zoom!

Off we go into the wild sky yonder,

Keep the wings level and true;

If you'd live to be a grey-haired wonder

Keep the nose out of the blue! (Out of the blue, boy!)

Flying men, guarding the nation's border,

We'll be there, followed by more!

In echelon we carry on. Hey!

Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

The Special Operations Squadron is in charge of running and maintaining the standard of excellence within afterschool teams that previous cadets have left behind. Their purpose is to maintain that legacy and to put our Unit on the map by competing in competitions called Drill Meets. This

Squadron is the very livelihood of our

Unit and allows cadets to hone their leadership skills and tap into their potential. The Squadron is composed of multiple teams ranging from the competitive Drill or Rifle team to noncompetitive teams such as Model

Rocketry or APT. Each of these teams is led by a Commander who may choose to have a Superintendent to aid them in running and maintaining the team. The

Team Commander is required to send reports to the Squadron Commander to see their status.

C/Capt Devin Ross

To put it simply, Longhorn

Squadron IS THE CORPS! Longhorn

Squadron oversees the entire cadet body and is structured into multiple units called flights which is led by the Flight Commander and Flight Sargent. For some, being the Flight Commander or

Flight Sargent is the first stepping stones in advancement in their

J.R.O.T.C. career in terms of obtaining leadership experience and positions within the Corps.

Flight Commanders report to the

Squadron Commander on the status of their Flight via Flight

Reports. The Squadron also prepares and aids in activities that cadets participate in, such as the upcoming MLK Parade, Military

Ball, Socials, and even the

Promotion Board itself.

C/Capt Yadira Tovar

If you wear your uniform every week, then you have the Support Squadron to thank! The purpose of this

Squadron is to supply and outfit cadets with uniforms ranging from the Service Dress Coat to the famous

Battle Dress Uniform (BDU’s) and everything in between. Those who work under this Squadron have the important job of keeping track of uniforms and restocking when necessary. This Squadron works to provide teams and personnel with the proper items in order to carry it out successfully and appropriately.

Note: All Squadron Commanders are equal to one another. However, each has authority only over their own respective Squadron. Meaning that the Spec Ops Commander cannot fire or appoint people in jobs under

Longhorn Squadron and vice versa.

Please Note: All Executive Officers in EVERY Squadron have the same authority as the Commander.

Executive Officers are essentially the Commander’s right hand man and aids the Commander in his or her

Squadron. In the event that the Squadron

Commander is absent or not available, the Executive

Officer assumes command and becomes the

Squadron Commander until relieved. The NCO is the epitome of what an enlisted cadet should strive to be. NCO’s serve and aid the Commander and

Executive Officer in planning and executing goals for the Squadron. Despite difference in rank, NCO’s typically are granted authority by virtue of position.

What to Do Before, During, and After the Board

The Promotion Board is scheduled for the 21 st of January, which is a Wednesday. As a result you are required to wear the any variation of the uniform for a grade. However, for the Promotion

Board each cadet is required to wear the SERVICE DRESS UNIFORM (THE COAT WITH

TIE/TIE TAB) FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN THE BOARD REFUSING TO SEE

YOU. The wearing of medals is to be determine, but a general rule is the more stuff on you, the more stuff they’ll have to look (and judge) on. Some cadets choose to wear the shirt for the grade and put on the coat for the Promotion Board, this is perfectly fine. In contrast, some cadets choose to wear the Service Dress throughout the day, this is acceptable. However, you run the risk of dirtying or loosing material (ribbons, rank, medals etc.) during the day. Dry cleaning in advance is a PLUS.

During the Promotion Board, the class will be separated based on whether they are officers or enlisted as each have their own specific board (Do not worry, they will ask the same questions but a standard is higher for officers). If you are not seeing the board, you are expected to sit at attention (could change based on commanders discretion) and remain quite (highly unlikely to change). At no point are you able to enter the room in which the Board is being held, unless you are called to do so. Once you are called to see the board, you will walk to the door and knock three (3) times and wait for a response (usually it’s a “come in” or “enter”). Once you enter, it is advised you maintain a professional persona by squaring your corners (basically doing a column right/left) and maintaining your bearing; if you don’t feel comfortable squaring your corners, then stop and do a facing movement when you need to turn as needed. In the end, you will make your way to the front of the table, centering yourself and saluting the board while saying “Cadet

(Rank) (First Name and Last Name) reports as ordered sir/mam” WAIT FOR A SALUTE

FROM THE BOARD, EVEN IF THEY TELL YOU TO SIT. IT IS MILITARY COURTESY

FOR SUPERIORS TO RETURN SALUTES ( If they ask why you are still saluting, this is your answer!) Once they return your salute, they will ask you to sit. Sit at the position of attention

(Front ten inches of the chair, back straight, legs together and hands on your knees) and keep your bearing. Bearing is very critical at this point! Do whatever it takes to maintain it, whether by biting your tongue or thinking bad thoughts, MAINTAIN IT! In the event they tell you to sit

UNIT: TX-957 at ease, you are allowed to sit all the way back in a more relaxed manner. However, DO NOT

LOSE YOUR BEARING! Answer all questions in a confident and professional manner. Some of the most common questions are as follows:

Why do you deserve a promotion?

What have you contributed to the Corps? What can you further contribute?

What have you learned within the Corps?

What is an O-5? (Or any rank based questions, check ranks! O-5 is a Lt. Col)

What Rank Am I? (This will test your knowledge on JROTC ranks on a visual basis)

Is a Captain lower or higher than a Major?

What are the Corps Values?

Once they concluded the board, you will stand and salute (wait for a salute back) and walk out

(Square your corners). At times they will ask you to notify the next cadet that it is their turn, if they do, you will walk outside (square corners!) and notify the cadet.

Finally you are done! After you are thru you will walk out the ROTC area. Once you are outside you are free to break bearing and be the goofball that you once were. Don’t act like a fool inside the ROTC area though, they do not forgive…The results of the board will be announced at the

Award Ceremony on a later date. Until then, you have survived the board and its perils.

Sincerely,

C/1st Lt. Hunter Granillo

Longhorn Executive Officer
