What are graphic
scores?
Graphic scores
• A graphic score is a
way in which a
composer can
compose a piece
without using
common music
notation.
Using Symbols to represent
instruments
• When using a graphic score, you need to
assign each instrument a symbol.
• The symbols can be simple or complicated, it
is up to you!
• Each symbol should be different so that the
score is easy to read.
What does the score look like?
• Once you have chosen your symbols, you will
need to put your symbols into a score

What are Graphic Scores?
Graphic scores are a way in which we can write music without having to write musical notes.
You can use shapes and symbols in your graphic score to represent an instrument. Here is
an example below using a drum, triangle and hands.
In groups of three, try to play the graphic score above, and then when you are ready put up
your hand to play it for the rest of the class.
Try to write your own graphic score below:
Draw your three symbols in these boxes and label what instrument they represent.
Remember: choose three different instruments, design a symbol, and then create tour score!
Draw your three
symbols in these
boxes and label
what instrument
they represent.
