COLLEGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: As you are planning your schedule, you also need to keep in mind the requirements of the college that you would like to attend. Though colleges may require the following courses for admission, the courses often may be taken during your college experience to fulfill the requirements. Check with the college you are applying to be sure of the admission requirements they will hold you accountable for. It is recommended that you do this as a sophomore or junior to be sure you have adequate time to complete the required courses for admission into the college of your choice! Four years of English Three years of Math—Algebra II and above (Not Consumer Math) Three years of Science Three years of Social Studies Two years of a single Second Language and One year of Visual or Performing Arts—**required only at University of Minnesota systems** (U of M, UMC, Morris, Duluth) The ACT test is required for entrance into all four-year colleges. It is a good idea to first take the ACT in the spring of your junior year. This will give you an idea of what the test is like and will leave enough time during the next year if you would like to re-take the test. Some colleges require the writing portion of the ACT, so be sure to check the requirements of the colleges you are interested in. Fertile- Beltrami School is now a testing site for the ACT. The test will be given in September and April every year at the school. Registration at our site is still online. The ACT is now required for all Juniors to take in the Spring of their Junior year. This is paid for by the state of Minnesota. There are no specific “core curriculum” courses required for admission to community or technical colleges. To be accepted into these postsecondary institutions, students will need a high school diploma or G.E.D., a pre-determined GPA (depending on the program), and take an entrance exam, often the ACCUPLACER test. NCAA REQUIREMENTS The NCAA has “Freshman-Eligibility Standards” requiring a minimum number of credits in a variety of areas; the exact number depends on the division the athlete is intending to compete in. If you are planning on playing college level athletics, it is essential that you plan out your classes for each year of high school to be sure you meet the NCAA requirements and are eligible to play! Visit www.ncaa.org for more information. The purpose of this high school program is to promote rigorous pursuits and provide opportunity for college credit to high school students. If you have questions about whether this opportunity is right for you, please check with the Dean of Students and instructors of College in the High School classes. The program could benefit you in several ways: 1. You have a chance to see what postsecondary education is all about without leaving the high school. 2. You can take classes that are academically challenging or cover areas of particular interest. 3. You can earn postsecondary credits along with your high school credit for courses with the opportunity of establishing a college transcript before leaving high school. 4. SAVE COLLEGE TUITION MONEY! Many CIHS classes taken in high school would take the place of college required courses, which means you would advance faster once in college saving money or allowing additional elective classes to be taken in college. However, colleges reserve the right to accept or decline CIHS credits, so be sure to check with the college you are interested in attending. How the program works You can enroll in certain high school courses under this program for college credit if you are a Minnesota 11th or 12th grade student enrolled in a public school. The admittance criteria, established by the college offering the CIHS credits, include: -Cumulative GPA (3.2 for juniors and 2.8 for seniors taking a MNCTC Fergus Falls course; 3.0 for juniors and seniors taking a UMC or Northland course) -College level score on a college entrance exam (ACT or Accuplacer). Passing scores are set and determined by the college. Deciding to Participate Before you decide to participate in the program, you and your parents should consider these points: -Motivation: Are you motivated to do extra work during the class that may be necessary for postsecondary credit? Classes are based on learning outcomes, not an amount of effort. Some students may need to put in more effort than others to achieve the learning outcomes. -Maturity: Do you want to establish a college transcript at the present time, knowing that it will transfer to college next year? Remember—transcripts are permanent records; decision to not take the class needs to happen before registering, otherwise your college transcript will show that you dropped the class, or that you received a poor grade. -Self-Discipline: Tracking assignments and deadlines, pacing work to not leave it until the last day before its deadline, and to understand that studying is just as important as completing assignments. The Minnesota State Community & Technical College in Fergus Falls, the University of Minnesota Crookston, and Northland Community and Technical College are possible institutions hosting courses at Fertile-Beltrami. Each institution has their specific criteria for entering a CIHS course. The following courses being offered for college credit is dependent on enrollment at Fertile-Beltrami. First Semester Credits College Composition I (3) Psychology (3) Web Design (3) Computer Applications I/II Full Year (8) Anatomy/Physiology I/II Full Year (8) College Algebra (3) Institution University of Minnesota, Crookston M State, Fergus Falls University of Minnesota, Crookston University of Minnesota, Crookston Northland, Thief River Falls Northland, Thief River Falls . The exam covers the areas of reading and writing. The exam needs to be passed, and then registration for the class can occur. The exam is usually available at Fertile-Beltrami. You will be told what the passing score and also the score you received after you take the exam. Examples of accepted college entrance exams are: ACT, ACCUPLACER, or SAT. Students in grades 10-12 have the option of taking the college in the high school classes as a noncollege credit class. By doing this, you would not be required to meet the criteria mentioned above and would receive regular high school credit for the classes, but be expected to complete all assignments for the class. ONLINE COLLEGE CLASSES Also offered at Fertile-Beltrami will be college classes that can be taken online. These classes are very rigorous. You need to be self-motivated and disciplined. The responsibility for these classes belongs to you. The enrollment criteria are similar to college in the high school classes at Fertile-Beltrami. These classes do not appear on the Fertile-Beltrami master schedule, as they need to be approved by the Dean of Students. Also, once you have registered for the course, you will NOT be able to drop the course as you would other courses at Fertile-Beltrami. A learning contract will need to be signed if an online course is registered for. *These are not Minnesota Transfer Curriculum Courses, which means that they are not guaranteed to transfer to other Minnesota State college members. POST-SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTION (PSEO) Any students considering PSEO need to talk with the Dean of Students and Principal. All available options will be discussed. Be prepared to share reasons for choosing this option, as it is a big decision. Post-Secondary students will be required to meet Fertile-Beltrami graduation requirements even though you are not attending F-B. ACADEMIC COMPETITIVENESS GRANTS Academic Competitiveness grants are awarded to students who can demonstrate that they completed a rigorous high school program of study before enrolling in college. Eligible students receive up to $750 in their first year of college, and $1,300 for the second year if they also maintain a 3.0 grade point average in college. Knowledge of this grant is important, as it can be a goal to strive for throughout high school. Getting good grades is important, but it is also important to challenge yourself with the classes that are chosen. Requirements for this grant include: - Four year of English Three years of Upper-Level Math Three years of Social Studies - Three years of Science, including two of biology, chemistry, or physics One year of a Foreign Language SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ACCESS TO RETAIN TALENT (SMART) GRANTS Another resource for money to attend college is the SMART grants. SMART grants are given to 3rd and 4th year college students that are pursuing majors in mathematics, science, technology, engineering or a critical foreign language. Eligible students receive $4,000 per year. SMART grants were created to encourage more students to pursue degrees in high-demand areas. Community Participation Community Participation Objective: Provide service to the community and school through volunteering time for beneficial activities and projects. Description: One of the requirements for graduation from Fertile-Beltrami High School will be to successfully complete sixteen (16) hours of service learning. These hours may be completed any time during the student’s four-year high school experience. No more than four (4) hours may be obtained from one source, as determined by school administration. It is suggested that students plan ahead and try to obtain four (4) hours each year, rather than wait to complete this requirement during their senior year. All students are encouraged to exceed these minimum requirements, and hours completed beyond the requirement will be recorded if turned in. Forms must be used to document each “service” occurrence. These forms are available at the office of the Dean of Students, high school office, and on the school’s website. These forms will be the only documentation of “service” that will be accepted. All forms must be submitted prior to May 15th of the school year in which the “service” was provided; prior year’s activities will not be accepted. It is each student’s responsibility to turn in the form to the Dean of Students. Hours will be documented and then placed in a cumulative file of Community Participation forms. The following are the suggested areas of “community participation”. Any student who would like consideration for another area to be considered should make a formal written request to the High School Principal prior to experience. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
