Cacioppo COURSE AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS Smithtown High School West Smithtown, NY 11787 COURSES: PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT/ LEADERSHIP (Description from Smithtown H.S. W est course catalog) Grade 12, Half Year, .5 Credit Prerequisite: Faculty Recommendation/Application/Acceptance by Departmental Committee This course will acquaint students with the components of leadership and will assist them in developing effective strategies for participation in activities on local, state, national and global levels. Students will be expected to conduct student-developed projects for the 9-12 campus. These projects may include Human Rights Activities, Voter Registration and other service component activities necessary to acquaint high school students with responsibilities of participatory citizenship. Students who participate in this program must be willing to devote considerable time to complete work outside of the classroom period. The course will place strong emphasis on government operations and skills essential for leadership and effective participation in our political process. In addition, this course will focus on the teaching and learning needs st for the 21 century, highlighting core skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication, initiative and self-direction, collaboration, and information and media literacy. The integration of these 21st century skills will assist students to become effective and productive citizens. Applications must be submitted by students and will be reviewed by a departmental committee for acceptance into the program. There will be one section of Leadership per semester. NY STATE BUSINESS HONOR SOCIETY, M.B.A. (Masters of Business Achievement) pending-Spring 2011 Academics: Achieve an A- (B+ for College Accounting I & II, College Business Law & E-Commerce) or better in three (3) units of credit in Business Education Courses (from 2009/2011).
