COURSE MATERIALS FOR POLS 2305
[All of this information is on Blackboard under “Course Materials”.]
You should have the following materials no later than January 28, 2013 to be prepared for class:

Textbook: Gateways to Democracy: The Essentials. 2012. John G. Geer, et al. Cengage

There are a few purchase options for these materials. Buying the materials new from the campus
bookstore is the best value. Another option open to those that have web-enabled devices (i.e. iPhone,
iPad) is to purchase only the textbook bundle from the bookstore and buy the Turning Technologies
clicker application, called ResponseWare. If students would like the application and have already
purchased the clicker, the bookstore will accept returned clickers if they are unopened and unused and
accompanied with a receipt by January 30, 2013.
Purchase options are shown below. Students are strongly encouraged to choose Option 1 or Option 2.
Purchasing a used textbook is not a good value for this class because we have negotiated a bundled
price with the textbook publisher.

The purpose of Aplia is to reiterate the course reading and explore the chapter contents through critical
thinking. Some students find Aplia to be difficult; it does require a couple of hours to complete. Students
should look at this as a “lab” of sorts – it is applying the material of the textbook in a different way than
the chapters and lecture. Making a good effort to read the chapters and complete the Aplia assignments
each week will help students to learn the material, which should shorten exam preparation time. Just
think – the more exposure to a topic in a variety of ways, the more we absorb and learn it.
Remember that Aplia is worth 15% of the final course grade in large lecture.
