Oral Communication – Speech #2
Informative Speech
I.
ASSIGNMENT – To deliver a 3-5 minute speech that informs the audience about some
defined aspect of an object, event, or concept.
II.
INSTRUCTIONS – The purpose of the Informative Speech is to share knowledge or give
information. An informative speech is designed to explain, instruct, define, clarify,
demonstrate, or teach. Listeners are asked to attend, comprehend, and assimilate
information, but they are not asked to change their beliefs and behaviors. The value of an
informative speech is measured by how much the speaker extends the audience’s present
knowledge in useful ways. As a result, an informative speaker must have a thorough
understanding of their subject and must make it relevant to the audience.
*Note: This is NOT a how-to speech. Any how-to topics proposed will be rejected.

STEP 1 – TOPIC SELECTION
A. Brainstorm topics using the handout “Informative Brain Storm.” Use this sheet to help
decide on your topic. All topics must be approved by the date below. Be aware that
unlike the last speech you CAN NOT change your topic after November 4. I will have a
list of topics and if you change your topic you will NOT be allowed to present your
speech, which will result in a zero.
B. All topics must be approved by the end of the class period on November 3. This is
worth 10 points.
STEP 2 – PLANNING
A. Once your topic is approved, you need to start planning out what you will say and what
you wish to talk about. This speech requires research and I am requiring you to have at
least THREE reputable sources. You will be given TWO DAYS of research in the
classroom, November 4 & 5. You will then have that weekend to finalize your research
and create your reference page.
You MUST take notes by hand and write down your sources. You cannot just copy and
paste articles as your notes. These notes will be used for completing your speech. I will
check your notes at the end of each day and you will receive participation points for
having the notes written.
On the other hand, the reference page needs to be typed and in MLA format.
B. The reference page AND written notes are due by the BEGINNING of class on
November 9. This is worth 20 points, not including the participation points earned
each day.
STEP 3 – WRITING
A. Now that you have done your research and explored at LEAST three sources, it is time to
begin constructing your speech. I have two outline formats you may utilize for this
speech, depending on which one works best for you. However, you MUST use one of
the templates I have provided.
B. The outline of your speech will be checked by the end of the class period on
November 10. This is worth 25 points. You will turn this in on the day you give your
speech.
STEP 4 – PEER REVIEW & REHEARSAL
A. In small groups, that I will assign, you need to rehearse your speeches and give each
other feedback on your presentation. Consider this a dress rehearsal. I will provide
feedback forms that you can use. These are notes you will give them that can help
improve their speech.
B. The rehearsals will be based on participation. This is worth 10 points.
STEP 5 – PRESENTATION
A. Speeches will be delivered Nov. 16 – Nov. 19. You will sign up for your time in advanced
and you MUST BE PREPARED TO GO THAT DAY. If you are absent, you will be moved to
the very end of the presentations. If you come unprepared you will lose points or
possibly receive a zero if you do not present at all. There are no make ups on speeches.
B. The following items MUST be turned in on the day you give your speech:
a. Finalized Speech Outline
b. Reference Page (with Three Sources)
