Purpose and Goals • • • • • • • • • engage students in careful reading and critical analysis of exceptional literature encourage students to read beyond text to sub-text and ultimately what that sub-text reveals aid students in understanding how writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure help students analyze a work’s structure, style and themes give students opportunities to discuss and write analytically about various pieces of literature provide students with opportunities to explore the process of writing (pre-writing to editing) teach students to write using all major college-level writing formats teach students the techniques of writing a quality research paper improve student’s writing by strengthening their diction, syntax, organization, etc. IV. Outcomes Literature • Students will recognize the conventions of literary genres (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and drama) and be able to discuss these conventions in close reading and analysis of diverse texts. • Students will demonstrate breadth of knowledge regarding literary traditions of British texts. • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which texts are written including global and multicultural perspectives. • Students will develop effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills demonstrated through analysis of texts.
