aid students in understanding how writers use language to provide both meaning and

literature
provide students with opportunities to explore the process of writing (pre-writing to
editing)
teach students to write using all major college-level writing formats
teach students the techniques of writing a quality research paper
improve student’s writing by strengthening their diction, syntax, organization, etc.
IV. Outcomes
Literature
•
Students will recognize the conventions of literary genres (poetry, fiction, non-fiction,
and drama) and be able to discuss these conventions in close reading and analysis of
diverse texts.
•
Students will demonstrate breadth of knowledge regarding literary traditions of British
texts.
•
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which texts are written
including global and multicultural perspectives.
•
Students will develop effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
demonstrated through analysis of texts.
Writing
•
Communicating Effectively: Students will demonstrate ability to produce writing that
demonstrates proficiency in standard edited American English to make reasoned, wellorganized arguments that are accurately documented.

Thinking Critically: Students will demonstrate ability to interpret and analyze the
relevance and quality of information, make judgments and draw conclusions based on
credible evidence, and integrate ideas into a coherent argument.

Researching Effectively: Students will develop effective interpersonal, oral, and written
communication skills, including using primary and secondary sources, demonstrated
through analysis of texts
