of retail Branding is John Torella’s world. With over three decades of experience with some of the world’s
most successful Brands—Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), Mark’s, Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen,
Sobeys—John brings a sense of trust and confidence. His credibility is enhanced by his books: Evolution of
Retail Marketing, re|Think Retail Branding, Whole-being Retail Branding, and Stop Talking Start Doing Retail
Branding. John is a graduate of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management Communications Strategy
program, the Brand Value program at Harvard Business School and Tuck School program on Strategic Brand
Management. His quest for thought leadership in retail Branding enables him to be a trusted advisor to his
clients. In 2006, John was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Marketing
Association (CMA) for his contribution to Canadian marketing and in 2012 was the recipient of Honorary Life
Membership to the CMA for his outstanding service and contributions.
Adrian Pynenburg
Principal, Connect Oasis
Adrian Pynenburg is Principal at Connect Oasis, a Retail Technology company focused on helping Retailers
and Brand Marketers gain visibility and intelligence across retail chains. Working with clients ranging from
Home Depot, Staples and Home Hardware, the Connect Oasis solution enhances merchandising efforts and
overall in-store experience by collecting and sharing meaningful field data. Pynenburg embraces technology
as a key component in driving better measurement, decision making and accelerating program execution. A
creative problem solver and strategic thinker, Adrian has earned a reputation as an innovative leader in
branding, retail design, merchandising, product development and implementation.
Before joining Connect Oasis, Pynenburg served as Principal and EVP at Storeimage and was founder and
President of Next Market. Working closely with some of the world’s largest retail organizations, Adrian led
teams in the development of in-store design, display and communication solutions. Through a constantly
shifting business environment, the focus was always on creating distinct customer experiences that increase
loyalty, satisfaction and sales. Notable clients include: A&P, Albertsons, Staples, and Dollar Tree.
In addition to having extensive corporate presentation experience, Adrian is a respected college and
university lecturer on a variety of retail topics.
Don Mayo
Managing Partner, Global, IMI International
Don Mayo started with IMI International in 1985 and developed and implemented a ROI optimization system
around the world. Don has been involved with the evaluation and optimization of marketing activations in 80
categories in 15 countries and has experience from the largest worldwide marketing campaigns and events
to grassroots marketing in towns with fewer than 1,000 people. Don has personally assisted in IMI
International compiling a proprietary database of over to 12,000 marketing activations relating to
‘optimizing the impact and ROI’ of the marketing program.
