OPENING:
This bulletin will be used to fill one regular full time (40 hr/wk) position for an Environmental Health
Specialist (EHS) 1 or 2 in our Environmental Public Health Division – Food Program. This registry may also be used for
any additional EHS 1 or 2 openings occurring within the next six months.
LAST DATE TO FILE APPLICATION: Friday, June 28, 2013, or until sufficient applications are received.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: EHS 1 at $3,665.81 - $4,679.32 per month and EHS 2 at $4,211.39 - $5,376.11 per
month not including longevity pay.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The EHS 1 position is an entry level position which receives close and detailed
supervision. The EHS 2 position has a considerable level of independence on assigned duties with minimal supervision.
Safeguards public health by obtaining compliance with applicable local and state regulations, policies, and procedures
through education, cooperation, and enforcement when necessary by performing the following duties: conducts routine
and follow-up inspections of retail food service establishments to determine compliance with regulations/procedures;
informs/educates appropriate clients/operators of compliance needs; initiates legal action as necessary after consultation
with program’s technical advisor and/or program manager; processes and approves permit applications; assists with
and/or coordinates the application review and inspection of permitted establishments; conducts plan review and preopening inspections; investigates program related complaints/illness outbreaks to determine appropriate course of action;
conducts educational meetings for the public (and industry); periodically represents the division at appropriate meetings
and/or conferences; provides front counter/phone coverage for program related issues; and maintains HIPAA compliance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree involving major study in sanitary science, bacteriology, public
health, environmental health, or other closely related science. The major study must include at least 30 semester or 45
quarter hours in the science category. EHS 1-no experience required. EHS 2 – Requires two year’s EHS 1 experience (or
equivalent).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of: environmental health principles and practices; fundamentals
of communicable diseases, their transmission, and methods of control; field investigation techniques; data gathering and
basic research principles; and. applicable federal, state, and local government regulations. Must have basic skills in
collecting and shipping lab samples, and in conducting educational and public information seminars. Prior experience in a
food safety or related program is preferred; a basic understanding of the food service industry is desired; good
written/verbal communication skills are required.
Ability to: gather, analyze and evaluate data and make
recommendations based on findings; establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, other
employees and the public; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; provide instruction and education to
groups and individuals; interpret regulations, policies, and procedures; utilize technical writing skills; and represent the

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Typically active work, often outdoors in all weather and possibly on rough terrain.
May require: lifting of up to 50 lbs. on an occasional basis; long hours of sitting/driving; and bending, stooping, and other
movement to inspect hard to reach areas. Must be able to conduct visual inspections. Must have a valid motor vehicle
driver's license and have access to a vehicle or have another means of accessing multiple sites in a timely manner.
