Uncle Sam, “You
Fellows will please stand back while I try these oyster sandwiches myself.”
The Saint Paul Globe, June 17, 1897
a) In this image Uncle Sam is shown with a giant fork in Hawaii holding off Japan and other countries, as he says he will have it all to himself. This symbolizes the U.S. being hypocritical going after countries and telling other countries they can’t.
b) This Image was printed in June of 1897 during the presidency of William McKinley.
• Islands were settled by entrepreneurs and business man looking to make a profit.
• In 1893 American settlers had aided in the overthrow of
Hawaiian Monarch Queen Liliuokalani.
• Sugar Cane was a large Resource on the island and the
Business men whop were there wanted to create business out of selling the cane.
• The Outbreak of war and the fight in the Philippines gave congress and President McKinley the pretext to complete
Annexation of Hawaii in July 1898
• The Pineapple Business and the Sugar Business exploded due to the amount of product that were on the islands for selling.
• A Hawaiian Revolution sprung out but there were only small protests and the Navy put protests to bed.
• Many saw the Annexation of the islands against the American
Constitution that we just marched right into another nations land and took over control by using Military force
The cartoon shows us that the US took Hawaii into it’s empire while letting other countries simply watch as Uncle
Sam tells the others to “stand back while I try these oyster sandwiches myself” and that is just a saying which generally stands for all that Hawaii has to offer.
The way the article portrays itself shows to the targeted audience that the US claimed Hawaii as its own while other countries watch its superiority.
This shows that society was easily swayed into believing what they saw.
Also shows that many Americans had a very patriotic view point and thought we were basically greater than other countries.
This cartoon makes it look like we just jumped into venture this land in competition with other countries.
We had rights to land since late 19 th century.
Almost makes it look like we are going to do good but in actuality we are just exploiting the land and its people.
The Senate
Philippine Bill Offers
Great Inducements to the Bad Filipino.
Minneapolis Tribune, 1899-1902
a) The picture shows a “savage” Filipino named bad, surrounded by animals labeled hunger, disease, the water torture, and all kinds of trouble inside a pit.
The “civilized” Filipino is labeled good next to a flag that reads peace, lands for the people, public improvements, public education, and prosperity. This symbolizes American help civilizing and helping the Filipinos.
b) This image was printed between 1899 and 1902 during the presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt and
William McKinley.
Long lasting Connection with trading

Today the Philippines is a U.S. protectorate
This cartoon makes us understand that we were going into unknown foreign land.
Shows us that possibly the Philippines at this time may not have been anywhere near as advanced politically, socially, and economically.
Shows that “we want to help these people” and definitely not to exploit these people for their resources and just to aggravate Spain.
This cartoon makes the people of the Philippines look like savages.
It made the people of the US think of it to be okay to intrude their lands because it appeared we helping a savage group of people live normally.
The way the Filipino looks in the cartoon is not an accurate depiction whatsoever and would make the audience think of them in a complete other way.
To what extent was US territorial expansion a proper and legitimate policy for the US to follow at the turn of the nineteenth century?
To a small extent was it a proper and legitimate policy to expand to Hawaii and the Philippines because we were mostly using these countries for their resources to expand our economy to more global markets and to just snatch up more land to grow the empire that is the United States of
America.
