Math 3323-003 Matrix Algebra TTR 9-10:20 am, Bell Hall 143, Spring 2011 CRN: 22468 Instructor: Dr. Dogan Office: BH 302 Email: hdogan@utep.edu Office Hours: TTR 10:30-11:30 am Or by appointment Phone: 747 6769 (e-mail preferred) Prerequisite: Calculus II topics, and maturity with abstract thinking. Supplementary Books: Introduction to linear algebra (Fifth Edition/any edition), by Johnson, Ries and Arnold or Elementary Linear Algebra by Larson Edwards and Falvo (e-book on webassign). Required Material: Webassign Access at least for homeworks is required. You can also purchase for access to the e-book (optional). Access webassign at http://www.webassign.net. Need to purchase a semester long key to access homeworks. Technology and Other materials: A graphing calculator. Access to Blackboard and webassign as well as investigation site at http://www.math.utep.edu:8080/jsp/index.html. Course Content: Matrix Algebra is a first course in Linear Algebra that introduces various concepts such as the systems of linear equations, vector space ideas and the matrix representations of linear transformations. Objective of the course is to have students gain the knowledge of applications of matrices in connection with vector spaces and linear transformations. Since matrices are strongly connected to the basic linear algebra concepts such as vector spaces and linear transformations, covering properties of these basic concepts will be the main focus. Course Requirements: Two Exams will be given. Each exam is comprehensive and no make-up or retakes will be given, except for documented emergencies. Exams will include everything covered/presented in class, on quizzes, investigations, and assigned homework. Dates will be announced at a later time. Investigations will be assigned via blackboard and posted directly to blackboard. Investigations will include topics (to be) covered in class in order to aid and enhance understanding of basic abstract concepts. Since they are to help with the learning of abstract concepts that are new to many of us, it is imperative that they are given substantial time and effort, and completed fully in a timely manner. Investigations will utilize the online modules at http://www.math.utep.edu:8080/jsp/index.html. Homework will be assigned via webassign. Homework questions may be included in quizzes, exams and final. Comprehensive Quizzes will be given covering hmws, investigations, materials covered in class. Since quizzes may be based on homework, it is in your best interest to complete each assignment. No make up or retakes will be given for quizzes or homeworks. Comprehensive final exam will be given. No make-ups or retakes will be given. Final will include everything covered/presented in class, on quizzes, investigations and assigned on homework. Final is on Tuesday May 10th 10 am-12:45 pm. Attendance and Participation: As with every college course, attendance is essential for success. There will be in-class activities that are important for your learning. Try not to be absent unless absolutely necessary. Electronic and Wireless Devices: Please do not use cell phones, pagers, IPods, MP3 players, blue tooth devices, etc. during class. Cell phones and pagers should be set to silent or vibrate, and any calls should be taken outside of class. Cell phone calculators may not be used on quizzes or exams. Grade Distribution: Final: 40% Exams: 30% Investigations, Hmw and Quizzes, class presentations: 25% Attendance and Participation: 5% Drop Deadline: The last day to drop the course without a “W” is April 1, 2011. Please note that the instructor will not drop students with a “W” after the drop date. You are responsible with the course material covered/presented in class, on quizzes, investigations and on homework. Seek help early in the semester. DO NOT WAIT TILL THE LAST WEEK OF CLASSES TO DISCUSS YOUR OVERALL PERFORMANCE IN THE COURSE. If you come early in the semester, you may get guidance and help both from the instructor and the Teaching Assistant. This will not be the case if you come towards the end of the semester. It is your responsibility to maintain the grade average required by a scholarship or other financial supports (if you are on one). Course grade will be assigned strictly based on performance in class. Your scholarship or financial support requirements will not be under consideration when assigning final grades. This syllabus is subject to changes when necessary.
