Children may stay for the first part of the service then leave for classes. Childcare is provided for infants and toddlers. We have been busy creating worship activity packets that help children (and people of all ages!) learn and focus during the worship service. Sitting still, with nothing to do but listen, can be hard for kids and even some adults. In fact, neuroscientists are learning that some activities actually help us focus in on what we are hearing or learning-especially activities with our hands. In particular, knitting, sewing, and coloring mandalas have been found to create the same brain patterns as those found during meditation--bestowing a calming, balancing effect. It is in reflection of this new understanding that our activity packs now include sewing, mandalas to color, and pipe cleaners. Adults are invited to try an activity pack too. Pick one up on your way into the sanctuary, just inside the doors. Get creative! It's good for your soul, and that's Faith Development! G ENERAL I NFO RMATION ● Listening devices are available so you can hear every word. ● Grocery cards for local grocery chains are available for purchase. You get the full face value of the card, and in return, CUC receives five percent on every dollar. The Center for Food Action accepts donations of these cards to support its eight food pantries. Cards are from ShopRite, A&P, Kings, and Stop & Shop retailers in denominations from $5 to $100. ● Lifespan Faith Development programs for all ages. Committee members will register your children and youth for the 2013-2014 church year. At the Welcome Center Welcome all visitors! We invite you to make Central Unitarian Church your religious home. We have just the circle for you! Lisa Horton facilitates a Covenant Circle for folks who are fairly new to us or to the idea of Covenant Circles. Our Circles are usually a 12-month commitment, for two hours each month and meets the second Monday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at CUC in the Lounge, and your commitment is for only that night to be present with the group. You should come as you are able. The plan, similar to our well-established circles is to join in deep conversation on topics of ultimacy (the universal “us”) and intimacy (the interpersonal “us”). Think about starting some new connections. After a few circles you may decide to be part of a 12-month circle, often the connections continue long after the year is through. Join us on Monday, January 13. Contact Lisa at hickoryhorton@hotmail.com or call her at (845) 398-0141. Remember the 24 Years of Spring Fling Fun and Look Forward to Making the 25th the Best Ever! Auctions, Raffles, Music for the Whole Family W ELCOME TO C ENTRAL U NITARIAN C HURCH In 1897, a small group of folks founded the Hackensack Unitarian Congregational Church. By 1956, the congregation had outgrown its walls and moved to Paramus, changing the name to Central Unitarian Church (CUC). Our members come from all over Bergen and neighboring counties. CUC is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association; the UUA's Central East Regional Group (CERG) that includes congregations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania; and the UU District of Metro New York. C ONTACT CUC The next round of Circle Suppers will take place on February 1. Sign-up continues in the rear of the Sanctuary through January 19 or contact April Elsasser. The program is modeled after old-fashioned small, purely social, potluck dinner parties. Groups of six to twelve adults gather on a Saturday evening at member host homes. The coordinators create varied groups of new and old friends. The host will contact their guests to tell them where they will be dining and what they should bring. Suppers are held bi-monthly on the first Saturday of the month. If you have not yet hosted, please consider hosting a supper this year so that our frequent hosts have the opportunity to visit the home of another member. A willingness of guests to take a turn preparing a main dish is also needed to ensure the continued success of this program. PLEASE NOTE: We do need to you to sign up for each Circle Supper you plan to attend. Our members are busy people so we won’t assume that you are available for every supper date. Questions?
