+ Unit 7: Thermodynamics Chemistry! + *Catalyst: WEEK 30 4/24/15 Explain how we can use a can of water to find the energy of a Cheeto. Also, is this a perfect method? Why or why not? Turn in week 30 question sheets! ***You have 1 song to complete the catalyst and to chat with neighbors! + 4/24/15 Learning Intention: We will demonstrate knowledge of the energy found in fuel and food. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we can conduct a self-designed procedure to calculate the amount of energy in a gram of a Flamin’ Hot. AGENDA! + Reminder SOW/Classroom Cardinal Class-wide procedure! LAB!!! Parting treats + + Every Student of the week. Friday I will recognize a student in each class who deserves to be recognized for their work that week Recognition can be due to academics, class participation, attendance increase, teamwork, dedication, etcetera. That student will be given an additional ticket at this time to be added to the drawing!! + Period 1… + Period 4… + Period 5… + Period 6… + Just look at that face. + + PART 2 – ENERGY IN FOOD Procedure together! I am going to demonstrate how I would write a detailed procedure (think aloud) Expectation: silently follow along, updating your procedure or asking questions as needed! Procedure + Data Procedure + Data Procedure + Data + Lab EXPECTATIONS! Quietly with lab group. C3-B4-ME. Then, raise hand & wait! LAB! Sitting or standing at lab table (distractions away). Actively following procedure & then completing analysis (#4-7)! 4) + Calculate the heat (q) produced by the food. This is the roughly the same as the heat gained by the water (so use the equation below!) Note the s (specific heat) of water is 4.186 J/gºC. water: q = s x m x ΔT 5) + Calculate the "fuel value" of the food by dividing the heat from the food by the mass of the food that burned (Original mass - final mass) Your answer will be in units of Joules per gram (J/g). 6) + So you just got the energy per gram in Flamin’ Hots, but your units are in Joules. Let’s convert this into Calories!!! (Use your answer from #5 and the equation below to do this!) Calories per gram of food = Energy per gram x (0.000239 Cal/J) 7) + If one serving of Cheetos Flamin' Hots is 28 grams, then how many Calories are in one serving, according to your results (from #6)? 8) + Does this match up with the Nutrition Facts label?! + PARTINING GIFT Put the lab in your binders – We will finish analysis on Monday! Good Be work today! safe & relax this weekend! SUCCESS CRITERIA Today you used calorimetry to find the amount of calories in every gram of Flamin Hots. Do you think food scientists use this method to figure out calories? Explain why or why not. 4/24/15 + NOVA: https://novaforjustice.wordpress.com/ + Videos!!!
