Updated: 1/5/16 Thomas Jefferson Middle School Physical Education Instructors: Coach Steinmetz, Coach Miller, and Coach Hile TJMS Physical Education Department Mission Statement: To promote pride and unity within the school community and provide diverse opportunities to develop, strengthen, and maintain ones physical, cognitive, and affective well being through physical fitness and lifetime activities. This course will offer students the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of lifetime physical fitness activities, and multiple team and individual sports. These activities include but are not limited to: *Volleyball *Softball/Wiffleball *Indoor/Outdoor Soccer *Basketball *Handball/Speedball *Golf/Frisbee Golf *Archery *Dodgeball/Pinblast *Washers/Hillbilly Golf *Floor Hockey (scooters) *FITNESSGRAM Testing *Cardio Circuit Training *Aerobic Fitness Games *Strength/Endurance Training *Personal Choice Day *Ultimate Games (Football, Frisbee, Capture the Flag, Pac-Mac, etc.) Gym Uniform: Students are required to dress out in t-shirts, sweatshirts, athletic shorts, and/or sweatpants. No sleeveless shirts, inappropriate advertising/graphics, shorts worn below the waist, or any clothing teachers deem inappropriate. Tennis shoes are required at all times. No sandals, boots, or black soled marking shoes. Your gym uniform is worth 5 out of the 10 daily points in physical education TO EARN FULL DRESS OUT POINTS, ALL OF THE ABOVE MUST BE WORN DURING PHYSICAL EDUCATION TIME!! Warning and conference with students Loss of individual right to participate Parent contact Office referral **Any and all of these will result in points deducted from daily grade. “Pride through Excellence.” Updated: 1/5/16 Grading & Grading Scale: Students can earn up to 10 points per class period. In order to earn all 10 points students must; be present, be on time, dress out, and fully participate. Grades will also be given for one twenty-point test each quarter. 92.5-100= A 89.5-92= A86.5-89= B+ 82.5-86= B 79.5-82= B76.5-79= C+ 72.5-76= C 69.5-72= C66.5-69= D+ 62.5-66= D 59.5-62= D59 & Below= F Lockers/Lockeroom: **Lockers and pad locks will be issued during the second week of class. Students will be charged for any damage to these items. **Students are responsible for locking their possessions before, during, and after class in order to prevent theft. **Students must hand in the appropriate padlock at the end of the year, or upon transferring from TJMS. A replacement fee of $6 will be charged for lost or damaged locks. **THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SHARING OF LOCKERS!! **There is NO talking in the locker room. **Students in Coach Hile & Coach Steinmetz’s class will report directly to the locker room to get dressed out. **Students in Coach Miller’s class will report directly to the gym in their assigned spot until dismissed to dress out. **Students who are not dressing out for PE will not be allowed in the locker rooms. They will need to remain in the gym in their assigned spots or up and walking until warm ups begin. Medical Excuse: Physician’s instructions should include the amount of activity permitted and specific limitations. This excuses the student from activity only, not from dressing out. A student must have a physician’s note, not a parent note to be excused from activity. Absent Work: If a student is absent from PE class for any reason they will receive a zero for that day. Students have the opportunity to earn daily points back by turning in a fully completed Physical Education Article Summary. These summaries are due one week after the date of the absence and will earn student full credit towards grade. Tardies: Physical education students are considered tardy if: 1. 2. 3. They are not in the gym by the three-minute passing window. They are not dressed and sitting in their assigned squad line in the three-minute changing time. They are not seated in their ASSIGNED squad line in the gym at the required class time. ISS/OSS: If a student has been assigned ISS/OSS for any reason they will receive a zero for that day. Students have the opportunity to earn daily points back by turning in a fully completed Physical Education Article Summary. The summary will be worth 8/10 of the daily points. Along with the summary, students will need to complete an activity log to ensure they demonstrated some sort of physical activity for at least 45 minutes during the days they missed “Pride through Excellence.” Updated: 1/5/16 PE. These activity logs must be completed at home and signed by a parent in order to earn the other 2 daily points. These papers are due the day you return to class in order to receive full credit towards your grade. “Pride through Excellence.”
